LS1-Powered 1954 Corvette

1954 Chevrolet Corvette

When it comes to restomods, this Black/Red 1954 Corvette might be one of the coolest of them all. It was built by Darwin Clark, a former GM Vice President who once led the Oldsmobile brand back in the 1990s. After retiring from GM with 45 years of service, he set out to build his version of the Ultimate Corvette in early 2000s. The result is this black 1954 Corvette roadster with an LS1 V8 and a 4LE60E automatic transmission.

Like most restomods, this build addresses the biggest issues with vintage cars and that’s the suspension. Clark used many of the components from the C4 that were custom matched to the 1954. A double-wishbone C4 front suspension and an independent rear suspension greatly improved the ride and handling, while the braking and steering systems of the C4 were also mated into the vintage roadster. The Corvette also has a fantastic stance with Halibrand 16×8.5 “kidney-bean” wheels mounted on 245/50ZR16 tires as Clark set out to match the inspiration offered by the early GM Motorama concept cars.

As a C5 owner at the time, Clark went with a 1998 LS1 V8 engine and it was mated to aforementioned automatic transmission. A custom stainless steel exhaust system was fabricated with 2.5-inch tubing with a pair of Flowmaster mufflers providing the rich, V8 rumble out the back. A dyno sheet comes with the documentation.

Much of the custom work on the car was done by a former GM designer named Steve Pasteiner of Advanced Automotive Technologies. (AAT was responsible for the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Corvettes that transformed the C5 Corvette into a retro version of the 1953 model.) Clark wanted to give it the “Harley Earl feel” represented by the Motorama cars. That included a special hand-fabricated center console and armrest, Auto Meter white-faced gauges, a smaller diameter steering wheel, and sculpted seats with a French seam to allow for a 6’2″ person to drive the car comfortably.

Once completed, the 1954 Corvette nicknamed the “Retro-Jet Vette” received “Best in Class” and “Best Sports in Show” at the prestigious 2004 Detroit Autorama. It’s been featured in Popular Hot Rodding Magazine, and the car has been displayed at the National Corvette Museum.

1965 Corvette Convertible L84 327/375 Fuelie 4-Speed

1965 Corvette Convertible

If you’re looking for a classic Corvette that is both fun to drive and has some nice collectability to it, you can’t go wrong with this 1965 Corvette Sting Ray Convertible offered by Corvette Mike on Bring a Trailer. Most of the key components are the same ones that left the St. Louis factory in January 1965, and it comes with a lot of documentation including the owner’s manual, service receipts, and an NCRS Second-Flight Award with judging sheets.

The 1965 Corvette model year featured a number of firsts, which included the use of 4-wheel disc brakes and the first big block, but it would also be remembered as the last year for the fuel-injected small block. This 1965 Corvette Sting Ray is one of 771 Corvettes equipped with the fuel-injected 327/375 hp L84 V8 engine. The HN Suffix Code confirms its 4-speed manual transmission and there are 41,126 miles showing on the odometer.

The Milano Maroon exterior looks great to this day as it was originally resprayed with its original color back in 2001. Inside is a beautiful Saddle Vinyl interior (code 420) and its featured throughout the interior with the dash, door panels, seat belts, and carpet receiving the color. The Convertible soft top is also Saddle, and it’s a near color match to the Sting Ray’s Coker Classic Goldline radials mounted to the 15″ cast-aluminum turbine-style wheels.
