[VIDEO] C8 Corvette Z06 Battles Ford GT in Clash of American Titans

Ali v. Frazier, Magic v. Bird, Manning v. Brady. Some matchups are so sweet that we’ll be there with bells on (never really understood that phrase, but, considering the season, it feels appropriate), no matter how many times they transpire. Almost a year, to the day after the always excellent Throttle House pitted a perfectly-spec’d Rapid Blue Z07 against a pure embodiment of the American Exotic, CarWow has organized a rematch!

With a little help from our friend Jesse Iwuji (he’s everywhere right now!), the Peterson Automotive Museum, and, get this, the actual designer of the 2005-06 Ford GT, the CW YT channel proudly brings you round two of C8 Z06 vs. Second-Gen Ford GT! Unfortunately, this all-star cast is still missing the boat, and there won’t be a road course portion to this triathlon, but the Amplify Orange Z will still meet its high-end foe in standing and rolling drags while treating your ears to its wonderful flat-plane 8,600 RPM song!

You know by now, but, to make comparison easier, the top-dog ‘Vette’s most important straight-line statistics include 670 free-breathing horses, 460 lb-ft of twist, and a curb weight of around 3,600 lbs. Unlike the previous matchup, the Z06 in the ring today is a base aero coupe, which should be a significant benefit on the back-nine of these specific races.

TITLE

The 2017-23 GT was assembled for Ford by Multimatic in Canada. Its primary advantage in this throwdown comes from an extensive use of Carbon Fiber which it leverages to undercut the Corvette’s weight by the equivalent of one NFL-sized offensive lineman. It features a twin-turbo 3.5L “EcoBoost” V6 that, once on full boost, makes 647 HP in pre-2020 models like this one. Pair that with a vast reservoir of torque (550 lb-ft, to be exact), and you have one of the most formidable four-wheeled weapons to ever hail from North America. It is also worth noting that these rare beasts originally started around $450,000 but benefited from (or were burdened by, depending on your point of view) instant and rapid appreciation. Today, even the lowest optioned examples command in excess of $1,000,000, no matter who you are, that’s a lot of boxes of ziti!

The Z06 gives up its leg up in the driver department, with professional racer Iwuji generously allowing CW’s English host to pilot his 5.5L baby through the festivities. As we alluded to earlier, it is none other than Camilo Pardo behind the wheel of his personal, semi-Gulf-livery’d GT in the other lane. The designer of the Blue Oval’s supercharged 100th Birthday present to itself moved to Detroit when he was ten, and wound up making a substantial mark on the city’s primary art form (while, like many obviously brilliant people, he’s a bit of an acquired taste on film, he’s a fascinating guy – click on his name above for some further reading, if you’re interested!).

No spoilers today, boys and girls! You’ll have to click play to see how the most recent matchup of domestic mid-engine tours-de-force shakes out, but trust us, it’s worth it!

  1. Ironic that the beautiful Ford GT has the classic Corvette disc tailights, that the actual Vette no longer has. Being a Vette owner I felt it was a betrayal to what had been a long standing tradition.

  2. Don’t care for the Ford GT’s twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 but you gotta admit it has impressive power and sound for a V6. The results were mostly not what I expected for the Z06 against the GT.

  3. What a lame video, I could only do a few minutes. Way to much talking by the douche bag, no the Vette sounds way better and looks way better. The GT isn’t even built by Ford, at least GM builds their own super-car. The difference in price and what you get, makes the Vette the winner easily. Ford GT is massively overrated and way overpriced.

  4. Both of these cars are awesome, but with the price difference, I call the Corvette the big winner here. I can’t really believe that there are still people hung up on the round tail lights thing, in 1990, the ZR-1 went to a rectangular tail light, which moved to the regular production C-4, then the C-5, didn’t have round tail lights, they were oval, Jpchiesa, you sound like the people almost 100 years ago that didn’t want to see the buggy whip disappear, I guess you want the Corvette to never progress, I as a current C2 and C6 owner absolutely think the C-8 is a stunning car and can’t wait for late 2026 when I order my C-8
