[VIDEO] Corvette Z06 Owner Takes On the Ron Fellow's Z06 Owner's School at Spring Mountain

When you purchase a new C8 Corvette Stingray or Z06, you are automatically granted a voucher to attend the two-day Corvette Owner’s School at Spring Mountain Motor Report and Country Club in Pahrump, Nevada which is about an hour west of Las Vegas. That voucher is good for one year and your cost to attend is just $1,000. If you don’t take advantage of it, you are really short-changing your Corvette driving experience as you will learn all about controlling these high performance sports cars on the safe confines of a track as opposed to on the street, and the lessons learned there can be applied to any driving situation.

A member of the MidEngineCorvetteForum.com named F152tall just completed the new course for Z06 owners and gave his impressions in a post, while also sharing a well-produced video that shows all aspects of the exercises that students will undertake during the two-days. F152tall also used the getaway to take his daughter with him, and she was able to enjoy a hot lap each day as well.

From his comments, it’s clear that F152tall is an experienced driver, and he also shares what he calls “his errors” over the two days and includes them in the video as well. The video features the PDR from the Corvette plus views from the cockpit via a GoPro, while his daughter also filmed him running the track from the observation tower. It’s good stuff so make sure you watch the entire video.

From F152tall via the MECF:

I just got back from the owner’s course. 7-8 July. Great time. Wow. This car is soooo much more capable than the Stingray. There were 18 students. 6 of them were Z06. All student Z06s had the Z07 track package. Ron Fellows takes off the Cup2Rs and put on the Pilot Sport 4S tires. I can only imagine the grip you get with the Cup2Rs on braking and cornering.

Launch control was as expected. 3.2 downhill. 3.7 uphill. That’s with a density altitude above 5000+ with the 95 degree heat. Good hookup either way. Just lacks the sea level power.

Autocross was fun. Different course than any of my other trips there. Last turn was a long sweeper. Hadn’t seen that one on any of my autocross courses. My daughter came with me and she really enjoyed the hot laps. Got one each day. She got to ride in the same Z06 I was assigned for the two days. Owner’s course instruction was phenomenal as usual. Rick Malone greeted us at the beginning of day 1.

The track conditions were good. Not too terribly hot for July. Not too dusty. Good grip overall. The aero package on these Z06s really helps in the corners. I could really tell the difference. Especially the high speed on turn 2. Wow. You can take it at 90+ mph and barely lift on the throttle.

I made a few notable errors over the two days. One of them was exiting 10 where I was 1/4 second early on the throttle. Lost some traction there. The instructor was great and did what he should have done which is slow me down for a bit and then we picked it up again. I also got loose on turn 3 in the bowl. Approaching the apex, I hadn’t used enough brake. My speed was about 5 mph too fast and I was noticing I wasn’t turning to make the apex cone like I wanted. I increased the steering from 65 degrees to 72. The lateral G at the time was 1.2 and it let loose. I caught it and stayed on the track but it got my attention. The lesson learned for me is listen to the tires and when at max performance accept a slightly wide apex. I hope you can learn from my mistakes. I included them on the video.

I got a number of views that I spliced together for your viewing pleasure. I included the PDR, a GoPro Black10 inside the cockpit, and at times my daughter filming from the tower. I spliced the audio too so the volume might not be consistent. I’m an amateur at video production. Just used iMovie.

Hope you enjoy the racing. Let me know your comments. I’m open to feedback.

Cheers
