In case you missed out on the joy of buying a 1990 Corvette ZR-1 back in the day, here’s another opportunity for you.

A California dealer named Fusion Motor Company currently has a first-year C4 ZR-1 for sale that has been driven only 30 miles, but the excitement of owning such an unmolested supercar will cost you a pretty penny and then some.

The dealer is asking a whopping $119,950, a price that might sound high but that’s actually not completely unreasonable based on previous sales. For instance, the highest price ever recorded for a C4 ZR-1 is $220,000 in 2008, but a ZR-1 with 21 miles brought $70,500 in 2021 and Hagerty and NADA currently say these cars are worth $75,000 and $40,800, respectively, for a Concours example. It all depends on how badly someone wants a “new” ZR-1 that still has the protective plastics and cardboard put there by the Bowling Green factory more than three decades ago.

My first thought on looking at the Fusion website, however, was a disappointment with the quality of the black paint. See for yourself and let us know what you think. Sure, the paint is shiny but just doesn’t have that “wow” factor you’d expect for a basically unused car.

Out of the 23,646 Corvettes built for 1990, only 3,032 were ZR-1s – an option that cost an extra $27,016, nearly as much as the base MSRP of $31,979!

For that money, though, you received the “King of the Hill” Corvette with a double overhead cam / 32 valve / aluminum block engine that was a collaboration of General Motors and Lotus engineers and then assembled in Oklahoma by Mercury Marine. The LT5 produced 375 horsepower – low compared to today’s standards, but at the time considerably more than the 250 horsepower of the standard L98 V8.

The LT5 would go on to earn accolades for its speed and dependability. While capable of zooming from 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds, a stock ZR-1 also set seven international and world records at a Texas test track on March 1, 1990, including a 24-hour endurance run at 175.885 mph for 4,221.256 miles.

Sadly, this particular car will probably never get a chance to repeat that sort of feat since its low-mileage nature likely condemns it to a life as a museum piece.

Along those lines, the new owner will get lots of documentation, including all the original accessories like the ZR-1 Coffee Table Book, VIN Specific Leather Document Holder, ZR-1 Music Sampler Cassette, ZR-1 VHS Cassette, and ZR-1 Gold Key Ring – along with the original window sticker, hang tags, and more.

Would you want this piece of Corvette history, or would you prefer a higher-mileage ZR-1 that you could actually enjoy on the road?

  1. Yep, don’t get it. Why the hell would you buy an awesome car like that and never drive it?? And what’s up with the paint?? Looks like shit.

  2. This car has probably been stored inside all its life, but it’s possible it has never had a drop of wax put on it. The paint on any black car is eventually going to turn to shit without regular washing and waxing.
