Chevrolet May Build a Corvette EV Sedan to Compete with the Porsche Taycan

What’s next – Corvette school buses?

That was one of the humorous responses to a new post by GM Authority about a proposed electric Corvette sedan that would compete against the likes of the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S.

GM Authority claims “sources familiar with the matter” say GM is considering such a new vehicle. With the overwhelming worldwide acceptance of the mid-engine C8 Corvette and GM’s strong push toward electric vehicles – including recent confirmation from President Mark Reuss that a “fully electric, Ultium-based Corvette” is on the way – it’s really not much of a leap to believe that the company might take the route of competitors like Porsche and Lamborghini.

While some people believe Chevy should leave well enough alone and make the Corvette a sports car only, others will argue that the profits from such a sedan and even an SUV Corvette would pay for the research and development that would ultimately make the Corvette sports car better. As for the dilution of the Corvette brand that some are arguing, does anyone really think that’s happened to Porsche’s 911 after the addition of the Panamera, Taycan, and Cayenne to their lineup?

If rumors are correct, the electric Corvette sedan would be based off the new GM BEV3 architecture, powered by next-generation GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium drive motors with a maximum driving range of 500 to 600 miles. They expect the sedan to be “relatively large,” likely around the same size as Taycan or Panamera, “a requirement to fit the new, rather sizable batteries.”

The new Corvette sedan – expected to launch “roughly mid-decade” – will likely include “a variety of different performance levels, as well as extensive weight-saving techniques, the latter of which is particularly important for a performance-oriented EV,” GM Authority claims.

Bottom line: Would you buy a Corvette sedan?

  1. “I drive a Corvette”. That statement says a lot about you. If there is a SuV Corvette or a Sedan. Goodbye that pride and comradery of being a Corvette Guy or Gal.

  2. I’m afraid the world is changing, for better or worse, and really doesn’t GAF whether some folks jump on board…or don’t.

  3. Who does not have an SUV? Even Ferrari has one. Sedan? Well if it looks good and has a market…fine with me. I would not likely want one but I recall when the thought of a Porsche SUV was “crazy”. However, they are doing quite well…as is the Lamborghini. “Dad” can’t justify a 2 seat Lambo but can justify one that transports the whole family. Something for everyone.

  4. Corvette is not an automobile make, it’s a model of the Chevrolet make. Corvette is a sports car, as is the 911. If the Cayenne and Panamera subsidize 911 development, which I doubt, then GM can do the same, which I doubt would be necessary. Corvette can stand on its own. Bring on the C9, C10, and so and so on. GM, don’t screw with the brand.

  5. RE: Would you buy a Corvette sedan?
I’m no more inclined to buy this SUV than the Taycan or Panamera.
SUVs are ‘utility’ vehicles that get punished in parking lots, & etc.
Corvette survived the Great Recession, GM bankruptcy and smog laws.
That’s because CHEVROLET can sell every Corvette is builds.
Would that be true of the SUV in an economic downturn?

  6. If they do this, it’s likely to be an expensive car. Why not just let the Cadillac brand do it? They are performance cars too, and already expensive.

  7. Agree on the Cadillac brand. If Chevy does this then the brand that we all grew up with is dead. Besides I would never park a battery car in my garage; like to sleep at night.

  8. Future conversation I want no part of:

    “What do you drive?”
    “A corvette.”
    “Oh, the SUV?”

No thanks, GM. Don’t dilute your halo brand. It will cease to be synonymous with performance if you do this.
