Corvettes for Sale: 1977 Corvette with 12K Miles on BaT

The owner of this 1977 Corvette coupe says he has been a lifelong Corvette enthusiast since 1972 when he and his brothers pulled a ’63 split-window coupe from the destruction of Hurricane Agnes in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Late in his nearly 50-year career as an auto dealer, he came across this Silver Blue Metallic Stingray with just 12,000 miles on the odometer, purchasing it from the second owner who had kept it in his garage from 1979 to 2021.

Now, he’s decided to part with the car on Bring a Trailer, where the current bid has climbed to $15,536 with four days left in the auction. In the comments section, one man who’s seen it in person says this Stingray “shows amazing” and that “if I had room this car would be coming to my house,” furthermore calling it “one of the nicest and original C3s I have seen.”

One interesting fact about the car is that Silver Blue Metallic isn’t included in the list of paint colors for the ’77 models in the Corvette Black Book, but the original MSRP definitely shows that the car was painted 26L Silver Blue Metallic. In the CBB, Code 26 paint is referred to as Corvette Light Blue; does anyone know the story behind that?

Regardless, the paint looks very nice in the photos and is apparently all original other than a repaint of the faded front bumper. There is said to be some blushing in the metallic paint, and the urethane rear bumper – like so many others from the era – is faded.

Inside, as you might expect from such a low-mileage car, the Smoke Gray leather is like new, and the interior is excellent throughout.

The original sticker is taped to the passenger window and shows a final MSRP of $10,467.65 – with $1,609 worth of options include power windows, rear defogger, four-season air conditioning, sport mirrors on both sides, cruise control, tilt-telescopic steering wheel, and AM/FM stereo tape player.

It features the no-cost 190-horsepower base engine – denoted by the second owner with the addition of aftermarket L48 emblems – that is connected to a Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission.

The ’77 model year was one of the most popular in Corvette history, with some 49,213 coupes sold to rank behind only the 53,807 sold in ’79. Would you like to have this one in your garage?

  1. The correct Corvette color names are called “merchandising” names. These are the names indicated in the Corvette dealer brochure. The 1977 brochure indicates Light Blue Metallic, as does the factory build sheet for the car (seen in the ad). Paint manufacturer charts also indicate Light Blue Metallic – but those paint manufacturer charts typically use the GM “corporate” name for the color. However, the window sticker and the invoice indicate Silver Blue Metallic. A Corvette enthusiast might see that the cover of the 1977 brochure has a very strange steering wheel displayed, likely because of the fall-out from the infamous “Vega” steering wheel used in 1976. That steering wheel design was never used. This may indicate that the 1977 brochure was printed very early and that changes were made. It is possible that the Light Blue Metallic name was changed to Silver Blue Metallic in time for window sticker and invoice production. The same “name issue” happened to the 28L Dark Blue color in 1977: only the window stickers called the color Indigo Blue (a very cool name). Note that the only metallic colors in 1977 were Silver and Light Blue, a big departure from all the Corvette metallics and Firemists of the early 1970s.

  2. I’d love to have this 77 in my garage. I recall this color being called Corvette Light Blue and Silver Blue Metallic was a 1982 Corvette color.
