RUMOR: Is a Bump In Horsepower for the LT2 V8 Engine In the Works?

Within a generation, Chevy has always continued to make incremental improvements to the Corvette along the way.

Remember, for example, the bump in horsepower during the fourth generation from the ’91 base model’s 250 horsepower to the 300 in ’92?

Could a similar change now be coming for the C8 Corvette Stingray?

GM Authority, pointing to a set of exclusive spy photos, is surmising that might indeed be the case, based on the two “strange” exhaust pipes protruding from the rear of what appears to be an otherwise normal Stingray.

“The twin pipes are longer and thinner than the quad outboard exhaust tips we’re used to seeing on the Corvette Stingray,” the website writes, “so what could they be?”

The odd exhaust pipes on the prototype Stingray, which has manufacturer plates and has been spotted testing near GM facilities, could be for EPA certification, “which indicates that the C8 Corvette Stingray may be poised for a few powertrain revisions, meaning either more power, reduced emissions, or both,” GM Authority construes.

The Stingray with Performance Exhaust already creates 495 horsepower, of course, and GM naturally hasn’t released any information about increasing that figure in future models.

Some people believe that the odd-looking Stingray might be a mule for a forthcoming model like the E-Ray or the ZR1. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we?

  1. Hi, I did a longer post on MECF on this topic, but what you can see here is 100% the european C8. Look at the clear reflectors in the rear and headlights and the brakelight setup with only the outer half of the the outer champer being the brakelight -> 100% european model.
For EU in mid 2024 all new cars must have new assistants like emergency braking and emergency lane assist. Even if no changes to power occur they have to make a new homologation including an emissiontest, since every change to the weigth requires a new measurement. So this is most likely just a regular test for europe to continue selling the Stingray and nothing exiting.

  2. So much speculation on the C8. Sometimes the HP goes the other way like it did in the 70s. Maybe they are trying to meet CAFE standards or CARB rules.

  3. GM insists that the 6.3 is maxed out in HP for production purposes. Yes, of coarse tuners get more, but do not live with the same potential penalties that manufacture does. I read some time ago by a factory rep that the manufactures will back of 5% from max to allow room for ‘non compliance by the engine EPA wise. The reason being if random tests show non compliance all of those engines are subject to a fine.
When you think about it, makes since how easily tuners get get a small, but measurable increase without significant upgrades. Just sayin’…..

  4. Yes, all about scale. Most folks are happy enough with 495 HP, but then there are the few…

  5. I think it is a new car for the next and upcoming 007 Bond series movies and those are pipes that squirt soapy water since squirting oil would be environmentally unexceptable.
