Jonny Edgar believes he has taken “quite a big step” forward in his second season behind the wheel of a GT car.

Now the 22-year-old Englishman hopes that step will lead him straight to a factory ride with Corvette Racing.

Edgar has emerged as a rising star this season driving TF Sport’s No. 33 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the FIA World Endurance Championship, and he makes no secret about where he would like his career to go next.

“That’s definitely a goal of mine,” Edgar told Sportscar365. “In an ideal world, I’d love to be at Corvette. I really enjoy working with all of the people.”

Edgar has strengthened his case with several impressive performances this season, including a marathon stint that helped deliver a class victory in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. He currently leads the LMGT3 points standings.

“Especially this year, I’ve really liked driving the car,” Edgar said. “I feel like with my own personal performance that I’ve made quite a big step, this being my second year in GT cars.

“I feel like I’ve improved a lot.”

Edgar won the 2024 European Le Mans Series LMP2 championship before moving into GT3 competition, where he has spent both of his seasons alongside veteran Ben Keating in the WEC.

He nearly didn’t get the opportunity to continue in the Corvette this season. Edgar was initially upgraded from an FIA Silver driver rating to Gold last fall, but successfully appealed the decision and remained Silver for another year.

FIA driver ratings range from Bronze to Platinum, with Silver generally including developing drivers and Gold representing established professionals.

Given his recent results, a move to Gold next season appears likely for Edgar, who is reportedly on General Motors’ shortlist for a possible factory opportunity after Dani Juncadella departed for Genesis and was not replaced on Corvette Racing’s factory roster this year.

Edgar believes driving alongside Keating has put him in an ideal position to make that next career move.

“When you see most of the drivers that have been a Silver with Ben, nearly all of them have gone on to be a factory driver somewhere,” Edgar said.

That list includes Nico Varrone, who became a Corvette factory driver, and Henrique Chaves, who landed a factory role with Aston Martin.

“I’d love to make that next step,” Edgar said. “Ben obviously gives people the opportunity to do that.”

For now, Edgar is concentrating on continuing the season that has put him on the factory radar.

He also isn’t taking all the credit for his success, pointing to TF Sport and the strength of the Corvette Z06 GT3.R.

“There’s a lot of people that have to do everything right to get the results we’ve been having so far,” Edgar said.

If those results continue, Edgar hopes the next Corvette he drives will come with a factory contract.
