Corvettes for Sale: Rare Twin Turbo 1989 Callaway Corvette

Back in the late ’80s, a Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette was the ultimate Chevy sports car.

The Callaway made its debut in 1987 to much hullabaloo with 188 power-hungry customers choosing the factory option RPO B2K with modifications made by super tuner Reeves Callaway.

By the time this 1989 Callaway being offered on Craig’s List was built, however, interest in the cars was starting to wane, and only 67 were sold that year as customers were already looking ahead to the 385-horsepower ZR1 that would debut in ’90. The last Callaway C4s were built in 1991 as they became a moot point with the introduction of the 300-horsepower LT1 as the base engine for 1992. During its five-year run, 510 Callaways were built. (RPO B2K reappeared in 2012 in commemoration of Callaway Cars’ 25th Anniversary, with 26 cars built that year.)

According to Callaway:

1989 Callaway Twin Turbo Corvettes feature dual Rotomaster Compac turbochargers compressing inlet air gathered from the Callaway cold-air box and channeled through the boxed frame rail cross member, to the intercoolers. Pressurized air passes through the twin heat exchangers, then fed through the “Ram’s Horn” which houses two additional Bosch fuel injectors driven by the Callaway MicroFueler™ fuel enrichment controller. They added additional fuel under boost. The factory Tuned Port Injection upper manifolding was refinished on all 1989-1991 B2K cars by Callaway in a black wrinkle finish. Under-hood ducting channels cooling air to the intercoolers in a clever fashion. This vehicle also retains the proper oval exhaust tips, as added by Callaway to the factory sport mufflers.

All that custom work wasn’t cheap. Indeed, the Callaway Twin Turbo Package nearly doubled the price of a stock ’89, adding $25,895 to the base MSRP of $31,545.

The package wasn’t installed at the Bowling Green factory but instead was ordered through participating Chevy dealers as RPO B2K. It was the first and only time an engine option was available on a Corvette from an outside company. Chevy shipped new stock Corvettes to Callaway Engineering in Old Lyme, Connecticut for engine and other modifications, including a unique front bumper with air inlets and front and rear side body panels reminiscent of a Ferrari Testarossa. The final product produced 345 horsepower or some 105 more than the stock 240.

This red on red example – which has a six-speed manual transmission – is #37 out of the 67 built that year, and previous owners have obviously enjoyed the additional horsepower, putting 81,000 miles on the odometer in the last 33 years.

Included with the sale is an original receipt showing the price of the car off the showroom floor at $69,919.40. The asking price for rare car seems to be a reasonable $29,000, if it’s been properly maintained.
