Update on the Replacement Corvettes for Those Damaged by the Tornado

Kudos to General Motors once again for how they are handling the customers whose Corvettes were damaged in the December 11th tornado that struck the Corvette Assembly Plant.

We had been told that GM would be prioritizing the replacement of those cars, and we’ve learned today that some of those customers now have new TPWs for next week.

Tom R. was one of those owners whose Corvette was expected to be completed on Monday, December 13. On the C8 Corvette Owners Facebook page, he first alerted us last month that he received the call that his was one of the damaged Corvettes. Yesterday, he posted an update that his replacement order had just moved to status 3400 with a TPW of 1/10 and he received the new VIN as well. “Moving along now,” he says with smiley face emoji.

Since the plant reopened on December 20th, there have been only eight days of production. So while it was nearly a month from the date of the tornado, the new Corvettes for these customers were sequenced to begin production in just two weeks! That’s a very quick turnaround!

FYI, the VIN total is expected to cross the 11,000 threshold today as well.

Approximately 122 Corvettes that were on the assembly line at the time of the storm were deemed unsellable so they were hauled out behind the plant where they have a date with a crusher. The Insurer magazine recently wrote that total insurance claims for the Corvette Assembly Plant were estimated at $225 Million.

  1. Yes, kudos to GM for looking after the safety and wellness of all the Bowling Green Associates as a primary concern. Surprisingly they were able to pull resources in from other GM facilities to be able to produce C8s as quickly as they have. I’ll give them another kudos if they can please ship me my car that was built on 12/3/21 (pre-tornado). If they can build new cars and ship them, I would hope they could ship a car that was built more than 5 weeks ago.
