Corvettes on eBay: No Reserve 1968 Corvette

Sometimes through the years the history of a car can get lost.

Not so with this 1968 Corvette convertible currently being auctioned at no reserve on eBay.

In the listing, the seller, who believes he’s just the third owner over the past 53 years, includes a copy of the ad for the car when he bought it in late 1994, with the asking price just $14,500. He also has an early 1995 letter from the second owner that traces the history back to 1980 when he bought it for $7,500 from the original owner.

Now, the car is up for sale again, and with bidding slated to end on Friday, the highest offer has hit $17,700.

This Stingray has been parked since the turn of the century, and the owner readily admits it needs some work to get it roadworthy again.

“If you are hoping to find a car that requires a new battery and fresh gas before flipping for Reality TV Show money,” he quips, “this is the wrong car.”

He says he’s been asked for his opinion of what it will cost to repair the broken parts, but admits “asking me what I think would be as helpful as asking a random stranger. I don’t know, and I don’t want to mislead anyone, so I won’t guess.”

He does point out some of the flaws, however.

While the engine ran when the car was parked in 2000, it has since seized up and will need to be rebuilt, along with the fuel system, “perhaps more,” the seller admits. The engine is said to be “all there,” however, including the original smog pump and ignition shielding.

“Now it rolls, steers, and stops,” he says, though he says the hood release cable is broken and no pictures with the hood open are available. Pictures of the frame do show the engine is still in place, according to the listing. Speaking of that frame, the seller notes that this is a New England car that spent some time in Texas, but most of its life has been spent in snow country “so there is rust.”

Unfortunately, the seller lost his storage space, forcing him to leave the car outside for years where it soon became a home for squirrels. The engine seized during this time, and water also seeped into the gas tank from rain.

He admits the silver paint needs work – “how much is up to you.”

The hood and front fenders have developed small bubbles in the paint, and the rear deck has a piece the size of a playing card that has lifted off near the antenna. He suggests refinishing the deck and hood and considers the chrome to be in “good to fair” condition for its age. The new owner will also have to replace the cracked windshield.

On the bright side, the numbers on the engine, transmission, and rear end match, or so he’s been told by three shops. The aftermarket Flowmaster exhaust system has “no apparent holes or defects,” he says, and a new full carpet set will be included with the sale, along with two file boxes of documents, including the Build Manual for the do-it-yourself crowd. A hardtop also comes with the car, and we think it really makes it look sharp.

TITLE

The most interesting thing about this car, to someone not in the market, may be that 1994 ad that shows a number of first-year C3s, including three roadsters going for anywhere from $14,500 to $16,500 and an “excellent” coupe with a rare 427/435 L89 engine for $37,900. Makes me wish I had bought all four of them back in the day.

  1. Checked out the ad, at one time this was a pretty nice car. Makes me sad to see a Corvette neglected this way, they’re so special.
