Let’s say you own a C8 Corvette, the hottest car in America right now.

What would it take for you to part with it?

$20,000 over your purchase price? A free pickup truck? A date with Jennifer Aniston?

Well, you’re probably in for quite a shock when you find out that a fellow named Tommy, the owner of a 2020 Rapid Blue 3LT Corvette Stingray coupe, just traded his beautiful car for …

No, not a Ferrari 488.

No, not a Ford GT, nor an Acura NSX, nor a Toyota Supra.

Tommy traded it for a Mitsubishi Outlander, which is currently the slowest selling car in America. It takes a whopping 197.7 days one of these babies, about twice the national average of 96.9 days.

Talk about going from the penthouse to the outhouse!

Tommy traded his Corvette, which likely listed for between $70,000 and $80,000, depending on options, of course, at a Dallas-Fort Worth dealership, Hurst Autoplex, which we’re thought they had died and gone to Automotive Heaven.

“You want to do what????” they probably thought to themselves.

We’re sure there is more to this story, though. Maybe Tommy didn’t like the Corvette – naw, what is there not to like about a mid-engine Corvette? Maybe his financial picture had changed since the purchase. Maybe his wife didn’t like it.

Maybe, just maybe, we certainly hope he got the Outlander for free in exchange for his Corvette. After all, the dealership quickly posted it online for $96,991, and within two hours, they were handing the keys over to the new owner, a lucky dude named Ryan.

Despite paying perhaps $20,000 or more over sticker price, Ryan is quoted by The Drive as calling it “a real deal.” He might be right – after all, many folks are asking well over $100,000 for their used Stingrays.

We’ll leave you with this last thought. Hurst Autoplex says on Facebook that Tommy “is not hurting” over the deal, so perhaps this is just a case of the free enterprise, capitalistic system hard at work and everyone involved is happy with the outcome, which isn’t always the case when it comes to trading cars.

Still, we wonder, did Tommy have tears in his eyes as he left the lot in his Outlander?

  1. You say what is there not to like about the C8, well for me and I am sure a lot of people its the fact we could not carry a walker in it as my wife is severally handicapped! We just love our 2019 GS.

  2. I Bought a new Ford Probe back in the day & then got laid off.I traded it in on a 79 Fairmount Station Wagon. That worked for me at the time. The wagon had a factory 4 on the floor tho.

  3. Just maybe Tommy and the dealership had this planned from the very beginning. Tommy gets a great deal on the Outlander and the dealer make good money on the C8.

  4. Sounds like he did not get the wife’s permission to buy the Vette or there are new additions to the family. The guy just wants piece at home. Just my uneducated take

  5. What a stupid move, imo. And, the biggest insult is trading the Corvette in for a Mitsubishi anything. The dude doesn’t deserve a Corvette. Hopefully, Corvette Blogger can follow up on more details once they’re known.

  6. Tommy could have picked any car to for which to trade his C8 and would have been able to come up with some reason to justify his decision, except for a Mitsubishi. Do you know how bad their vehicles are? I won’t elaborate other than to say this company should really stick to making air conditioners and stop dumping their junk cars off on anyone.

  7. By looking at his picture picture, I would assume he bought the vehicle without checking one out during the previews that the dealers had in late 2019. Once he got into his new vehicle, he realized how difficult it is to get out.
I have to use a crane to get my father out of my 2020 Corvette. I’m in great shape, and I can see how this is not a “typical Corvette buyers” Vette anymore.
Note to all new owners….3 to 4 days of cardio each week and 4 days (minimum) of weightlifting.

  8. I am 77 & swim 500 yards of Fly every day then finish up with a 400IM plus 1100yds of free.
I am now accepting donations of 2020 Corvettes. I am sure I can get in & out with out a hitch

  9. Everyone does what they gotta do given what circumstances that are before them. I LOVE my C8, it’s the finest automobile I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned a lot of them in my 73 years of living including a ’66 427 roadster, ’02 Z06, two ’03 50th Anniversary Editions (one a coupe and the other a roadster), ’11 Grand Sport, ’17 Grand Sport and now the ’20 Stingray Z51. I have owned each of them for varying times, but never lost a dime on their sale, some I made a little. I dare say the 8 speed automatic Stingray out performs all the others which were all 4 – 7 speed manuals. So when it comes to parting with it, it’ll be the last asset to sell unless another C8 comes along that turns my head. I’m sure Tommy had good and well conceived reasons/motives to part with his C8 and as my wife says, “there’s always another one (anything) to buy.” Maybe Tommy will come back to the Corvette Culture later.

  10. Jeff M – Or you can do what I did: Install LAMBO doors on my C8. Getting in and out of the gaping hole is now much easier than before. best 3K accessory that I can think of.

  11. I saw that LAMBO video months ago Alex. As I remember, it added a significant amount of weight to the vehicle. But, VERY cool.
I thought about it. But decided I’d rather push the exit button on the seat and climb out on my own. It forces me to keep up my workouts for 6 days a week. Then, if I miss even one workout, the struggle to exit reminds me to get back into my gym. I’m only 58, but need to keep it up like Dave or my sons will have an excuse to “keep the oil circulated”.

  12. Allan Williamson, the eight speed automatic in the C7 is a piece of junk! I would take the manual over it any day. On the other hand the seven speed DCT in the C8 is sensational!

  13. K.G. Agree on the superiority of the 8 speed DCT in the C8. Couple it with the 40/60 weight distribution and you get the best ever Corvette 0-60. Can’t wait to drive one at the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School.

  14. Its obvious, this was never a “Corvette Guy” to begin with…let him keep his SOB…Ah…I mean SUV..save the C8 for someone who will appreciate it. There are these guys, who have the money to buy any car they want, and they will change cars all the time. A Ferrari one time, a BMW the next an Escapade after that and so on…just for the bragging rights. When you buy a car to make yourself look good, and not because you enjoy the qualities, engineering, and performance of a great automobile…then you are not a gear head, or even a car guy…just someone looking for attention.

  15. In reference to a chore getting out of the C-8, I sat in one when they were at Corvettes at Carlisle in 2019 and is much easier than getting out of the 2 C-4’s I owned years ago.

  16. Wow, it takes all kinds I guess. Why did he even buy it in the first place?? Moron. I’ll bet Ryan is smiling. Of course 70+ million voted for that POS Trump so who knows.
