If there’s one thing the racing world has learned, it’s never to count out Robert Wickens. The Canadian driver has spent the past several years defying expectations, returning to competition in 2022 after the horrific 2018 IndyCar crash that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
This week, Wickens is stepping up once again.
DXDT Racing confirmed that Wickens will replace teammate Salih Yoluc at the Motul SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix at Road America, with Yoluc forced to withdraw due to a family emergency. The late call up places Wickens alongside Mason Filippi and Charlie Eastwood in the No. 36 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R for the six-hour GTD contest.
Wickens has already made two WeatherTech Championship starts this season — at Long Beach and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park — both in DXDT’s GTD entry with Filippi. But this weekend marks his first Michelin Endurance Cup appearance since the 2017 Rolex 24 at Daytona, when he competed in LMP2 prior to his IndyCar accident.
His return to endurance racing comes with momentum. Wickens’ best result this season is sixth in class, and he earned a fourth place finish at CTMP during his five sprint outings with the team last year. He had also been slated to race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca earlier this season before DXDT withdrew following a transporter fire.
Wickens has spoken openly about wanting to run a full WeatherTech Championship campaign — including the endurance rounds — but funding challenges prevented that plan from materializing. This unexpected opportunity gives him a chance to finally tackle one of the series’ marquee long distance events.
DXDT will provide further updates as the team settles into its revised lineup for Road America.
