This 1962 Corvette Fuelie can trace its fascinating history back to the owner of the dealership that originally sold it, who quickly took it back in on trade and then drove it to a third-place finish in the July 1962 Pikes Peak Hill Climb.
The family of that dealer, Al Daniels of Colorado Springs, Colorado, removed the racing equipment and kept the Corvette until 2019, when it was sold and relocated to Florida.
But the car eventually found its way home.
Daniels’ granddaughter and her husband brought the Corvette back into the family through a Bring a Trailer auction in September 2021, returning it to Colorado Springs.
Now they’ve decided to let it go again — and this time the historic Fuelie is being offered at no reserve on BaT, where bidding has already reached $62,360 with six days remaining.
The Corvette certainly had the hardware to make an impression at Pikes Peak. Its 327 V8 featured factory Rochester mechanical fuel injection and a high-lift camshaft, producing 360 horsepower when new. It’s backed by a four-speed manual transmission and Positraction rear end.
The current owners say the engine is the original one that raced at Pikes Peak, although they believe it was rebuilt at some point after its racing days.
Around 2020, the fuel-injection system, distributor and generator were rebuilt, while the exhaust manifolds, exhaust system, spark plugs and wires, fuel tank, sender and fuel lines were replaced. It’s said to run best on 110 octane fuel.
Originally Almond Beige, the Corvette was later refinished in Fawn Beige. It still carries a Daniels Chevrolet dealer badge, while one unusual reminder of its competition days remains: the exterior side mirror was reportedly removed for racing and was never reinstalled.
he current owners also spent heavily to return another important piece of equipment to the car. Records indicate that a set of RPO 276 15×5.5-inch steel wheels was purchased in 2023 for $16,500.
Inside, the Corvette retains its period appearance with beige vinyl bucket seats, matching carpets and door panels and a body-colored dashboard, though the interior does show its age in a few areas. The seat foam and carpets are reportedly due for replacement, while the radio and clock are inoperative and the dash pad has shrunk around the windshield and rearview mirror. Its five-digit odometer shows more than 51,000 miles.
Just as important as the car itself is the documentation that comes with it. The sale includes original purchase documents, a window sticker, service records and period newspaper clippings. The Corvette – one of only 1,918 equipped with the 327/360 fuel-injected engine – was also featured in a 2022 issue of The Corvette Restorer. Unfortunately, after Bill’s death, his own detailed notes about the car were mistakenly thrown away.
This isn’t the first recent attempt to find the Corvette another home. It was offered on Bring a Trailer in April 2026 and has now returned, this time with no reserve.
That means someone will be taking home a Corvette with a history that would be difficult to duplicate.
Having a documented connection to the Chevrolet dealership that originally sold it would be interesting enough.
Having that dealer’s owner take it back, race it to a third-place finish at Pikes Peak and keep it in the family for decades makes this ’62 Fuelie something much more special.
And after leaving the Daniels family once and finding its way back, the old racer is once again looking for a new home.
