Where to begin with this 1970 Corvette T-top coupe that packs a lot of stories into the past 56 years?
It’s enough just to note that the car was purchased new by the current owner’s family.
But then throw in the fact that a custom five-year build has been completed by Reed’s Customs in Redding, California, with receipts totaling more than $211,000!
How about the extensive mechanical upgrades like a fuel-injected 454 V8, a Tremec five-speed manual transmission, Vintage Air climate control, Dakota Digital instruments, and Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes.
Then there are the cosmetic upgrades, like a maroon repaint in 2018, a cowl induction hood, Forgeline 18″ wheels inside Nitto tires, and new bumpers, glass, door handles, mirrors, and weatherstripping. Inside, the leather seats have been redone in Saddle leather, with brown complements on the buckets, console, dash, T-tops, and door panels. The rear cargo area might be one of the best we’ve seen in a classic C3, with a Plexiglass display window showing off the nicely wrapped custom speakers.
Any one of these descriptions would be enough to make this car stand out to any enthusiast, but add them all up and you’ve got a special car.
About the only thing left is the question: Do the changes fit the tastes of the next owner?
We’ll know soon as the car is being offered on Bring a Trailer, where the current bid stands at $22,500 with six days remaining in the auction.
That’s a long way from the six-figure investment made during the extensive restoration, but anyone familiar with custom cars knows that money spent building one doesn’t necessarily translate into money recovered when it’s sold.
And this Corvette certainly wasn’t built on a shoestring budget.
Under the hood sits a 454 V8 equipped with Holley electronic fuel injection, Holley smart-coil ignition, headers and a billet serpentine drive system, along with a Ron Davis aluminum radiator with dual electric fans.
Engine work performed in March 2020 included installation of a replacement camshaft, new intake manifold gaskets, resealing the oil pan and tuning the engine.
Power travels through a Tremec five-speed manual transmission with a twin-disc clutch to a Positraction limited-slip differential.
A custom dual exhaust system featuring an X-pipe and MagnaFlow stainless-steel mufflers should provide an appropriately muscular soundtrack.
The upgrades extend well beyond the engine compartment.
Ridetech coilovers at all four corners, a Ridetech rear suspension system, aftermarket control arms and sway bars bring modern technology to the classic C3 chassis.
Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering replaces the original steering arrangement, while Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes feature a Hydroboost power-assist system.
The Corvette rides on 18-inch Forgeline wheels wrapped in Nitto NT05 tires measuring 235/40 up front and 275/35 in the rear.
The digital odometer shows just 670 miles, reportedly representing the distance driven since the custom build was completed in 2022.
Offered on dealer consignment with extensive build records and a clean California title, this Corvette represents an unusual opportunity to acquire a heavily customized C3 without enduring years of restoration work.
Whether bidders embrace its combination of classic Corvette styling and modern technology remains to be seen.
One thing seems certain: Whoever takes this Corvette home will be getting considerably more than an ordinary 1970 Stingray.
