There’s good news and bad news for the rightful owner of a Torch Red C8 Corvette coupe in Harris County, Texas.

The good news: deputies recovered the stolen Stingray Wednesday evening.

The bad news: the recovery came only after a 16 mile pursuit that ended when the Corvette’s engine finally surrendered.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the chase began around 6 p.m. on the Eastex Freeway. A deputy first spotted the Corvette in the 14000 block, where the driver allegedly pulled out of a private driveway and failed to yield, nearly striking the patrol car. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver hit the gas instead.

What followed was a high speed run through multiple intersections, with the suspect reportedly blowing past stop signs and red lights as deputies trailed behind. The chase stretched across 16 miles before the Corvette’s engine suffered damage and the car coasted to a stop in the 3100 block of the South Freeway.

Deputies arrested the 42 year old driver at the scene. A check of the vehicle confirmed what the deputy likely suspected from the start: the Corvette had been reported stolen. Despite the length of the pursuit, authorities say no one was injured and no other vehicles were damaged.

So yes—the owner gets the Corvette back.

But after a 16 mile sprint at the hands of a fleeing suspect, and an engine that gave out under the strain, the car may be coming home with a story… and a repair bill. Wonder if that’s covered under warranty?

  1. Hard to believe that even at full tilt abuse, the engine only lasted 16 miles.
Maybe more to this story coming?
