It took three days and an auction crew brandishing a Bobcat to excavate the path to one of only 3,640 second-year Corvettes ever made—but it took 53 years for Todd to finally see his father’s car as something more than a glimpse of chrome buried in barn shadows.

“It’s been buried my entire life,” Todd said, watching WD Detailing’s crew muscle the Pennant Blue ghost of a Corvette into daylight on the way to getting it cleaned up after 53 years parked in a barn. “I’ve never really got to see the whole car as a complete car.”

The moment overwhelmed both Todd and his mother, Peggy. The camera turned away, granting them privacy as five decades collapsed into a single breath. This wasn’t just a car emerging from darkness—it was memory itself being excavated, layer by careful layer.

WD’s crew admits the car needs more than their usual magic: indeed, a complete restoration that could be undertaken by the new owner, to be determined at an upcoming online and in-person auction where another of the family’s classic Corvettes will also be offered. You may remember WD’s cleanup of her late husband’s 1984 Corvette, when he took out a second mortgage to buy the very first C4 ever built – VIN 001.

WD discovers that the original “Blue Flame” in-line six has been replaced by a more powerful V8 of some kind, not surprising considering those vintage “pie crust” slicks that remarkably still held air to get the car rolling out of the crypt where it had been stored for so many years.

The guys wonder if that owner will undertake a full restoration from top to bottom, or just do what’s needed to get it running and driving again and “enjoy it the way it is, just the way it was 53 years ago, and keep that old school patina.”

They believe it’s not only the oldest Corvette but also the “coolest” they’ve ever had the honor of cleaning up.

“Let’s be honest, this car is likely going to be repainted whenever the new owner purchases it,” the video host says. “They will strip it down to the bare fiberglass and then do a full repaint. But I want to bring this car back looking as good as possible to Peggy and her son. This is very, very old paint. And a clay bar only goes so far. So I’m going to use an abrasive polish again and a wool pad to brighten this up, remove all the dirt, and hopefully make this car look a little bit more presentable. But to be honest, I kind of like cars that have paint missing and ugly splotches here and there because it gives it character, especially a car from 1954, which is just insane that it’s here in our shop.”

Obviously, this car isn’t going to look as good as the usual WD jobs, but you’re still going to be surprised how sharp it looks when they’re finished, especially with the set of whitewall tires and Rally wheels installed for the reveal to Peggy and Todd.

As she circled the car, you could see her remembering—22 years old again, her 26-year-old husband beside her, young and invincible, cruising through small-town streets in their Pennant Blue future.

“I just wish he could have been here,” she said softly, her hand still resting on the fiberglass that had outlasted everything else.

In that moment, he was.

This 1954 Corvette is offered for sale this week by Carrick Auctions with bidding available online via Proxibid. You can see the listing for the VIN 001 1984 Corvette here as well.

  1. The 1954 Corvette originally had a 235 cubic inch “Blue Flame 6” with a three speed automatic transmission. We all know the motor in this car was swapped at some point. What is “off” to me is the chrome lettering stating “Fuel Injection”. That must have been a joke by the owner to scare the competition? Chevrolet didn’t come out with fuel injection until 1957. I hope someone buys this car and does a total restoration back to everything original. The car AND Peggy deserves that!

  2. Often wondered about the psychology behind buying and then parking a very cool car in the corner of a barn or in the woods and then forgetting about it. If you were thinking “appreciation” as in investment, wouldn’t you want to keep it as nice as possible? But then I always needed my vehicles – they were never surplus.
