Looks like our friend Rick ‘Corvette’ Conti may have found another change to the 2026 model year Corvettes that GM hasn’t told anyone about yet, but then he asks if we ever really needed it in the first place?
It’s a good question, and it looks like GM has finally answered: Nope!
The feature in question is the rear glass defroster on C8 Corvette Coupes. These are the micro-lines that run across the rear glass to defrost your rear window. Rick says that these two 2026 Corvettes shown in the video below from the NCM Motorsports Park no longer have them on their rear glass, which is nice as you get a clearer view of the engine bay.
Of course, a hot V8 running in the back basically accomplishes the same thing as the heat rises and melts off any ice or snow on the glass. The C8s are also equipped with the rear view mirror cameras so it’s not like you need to defrost your rear window to see what’s happening behind you.
However, we did hear from one 2026 owner who says the rear defrost button is still on the row of HVAC buttons. But that’s probably due to the feature still being used on the C8 Convertible’s small vertical rear window.
This reminds us of when Chevy removed the external hatch lock cylinder from behind the license plate. They determined it wasn’t really necessary to provide for an emergency unlock for the rear hatch when the battery is up in the frunk.

Imagine that, GM not being upfront and honest with their Most LOYAL CUSTOMERS…Corvette Owners!
Hey I understand the change but it’s frustrating that GM doesn’t announce the change, and it really makes you wonder what else are they not divulging in the changes they make! They are one of the WORST when it comes to customer service…try calling them all you get are recordings never a real person, and don’t get me started on this current recall for the C8 Z’s fuel diverter. I’ve called several dealerships in my area in regards to this serious recall and we the owners of these Z’s know more about the recall and fix than they do. I’ve been told by each Chevrolet dealership that there computer shows NO current fix available! Unacceptable and I’ll never purchase another newer vehicle from GM again there track record with recalls and the disregard in keeping customers informed is HORRENDOUS!
Might help that 6” of snow start to slide off quicker while you’re warming up that E-Ray coupe that can now be driven year round.
I picked up my new 2026 C8 Corvette Stingray Coupe on 9/6/2026 and realized the following day that the “Rear Window Defogger” was missing! I contacted my salesman that same day. And my friend Joe Lamb soon afterwards. The button also controls the defrosting / defogging of the exterior side mirrors on the coupe. So the button still has a purpose.
No, having a “hot V8” under the glass doesn’t accomplish the same thing. A rear window defogger starts working within seconds. The engine takes far longer to warm up, and even longer for the engine bay to get hot enough to defog the rear window. This is just GM cheaping out on us again.
Adds to the earnings per share. Probably will cover Bara’s raise.
I forgot to mention that Joe Lamb is in Rick Corvette Conti’s YouTube video.
It’s cute that people still order coupes.
A slicker, sleeker look for less money still has merit to some folks.
But, that view into the back window is priceless.
I agree, that view into the back window is priceless. I’d like to replace the window on mine with one that isn’t tinted as dark.
