Chevy built a few pre-production 1983 Corvettes for testing and development purposes before ultimately deciding to delay the unveiling of the C4 for another model year.

Those ’83s – a reported 43 of them – couldn’t be sold by General Motors, and all of them were supposed to be crushed by a company. Of course, we know the story of how an employee managed to rescue one of the cars that is now on display at the National Corvette Museum as the only 1983 Corvette still in existence.

The same scenario couldn’t happen with the C8 – at least theoretically – because according to a recent post on Facebook, GM pays for certain new Corvettes that can’t be sold for safety and liability reasons to be quickly chopped in half by a professional dismantler.

Brandon Woodley recently shared what his “day as an auto dismantler looks like” on the Dull Men’s Club Facebook page, offering three photos of a Corvette that he had recently sawed in half. He explained that cars like this “cannot be sold or rebuilt into a car, so we cut them in half and sell the halves.”

In case you’re thinking you might get around GM’s plan and just buy both halves, which is entirely legal, and then reassemble the two parts, it IS illegal to do that, with GM crossing out the VINs just in case you’re tempted to break the law anyway.

Most of these chopped cars are prototypes, test mules, or crash-test vehicles, Woodley explains.

He told the Carscoops that it’s easy and quick to chop the cars in half using a Sawzall with a metal blade – a process that can be completed in as little as three minutes.

The Accelerate Yellow C8 Corvette in the photos was one of the 122 C8 Corvettes damaged inside the Assembly Plant when it was struck by a tornado in the early morning hours of December 11, 2021. Those Corvettes were parted out by Brandon when he worked for Stricker Auto Parts in Batavia, OH.

  1. What about the parts? Are they recycled at a junkyard? Nothing wrong with that powertrain…
