I came across this entertaining video earlier this week and couldn’t get it out of my head, so here it is. DPCcars on YouTube did a side-by-side comparison of the 2025 Corvette ZR1’s record lap at Virginia International Raceway vs the 2019 Corvette ZR1 that ran the same course back when it was new.

Both Corvettes do amazing work at VIR and their individual strengths are on display in this all-out track attack. With 309 more horsepower, the C8 ZR1 is an absolute speed machine that accelerates like no other Corvette has done before. With the mid-engine configuration, the C8 ZR1 also appears to be more stable in the corners although we did see it get a little squirrelly a couple of times.

The C7 ZR1 may be slower on the straights when compared to the newer version, but watch how fast it’s able to tackle the various corners at high speed. And then there is the sound which is noticeably deeper than its high revving younger sibling.

When we first posted the five lap records from Chevrolet a couple weeks ago, we received a blog comment from former Corvette ride and handling engineer Jim Mero who said:

These are very good times. Something I expected. They’re very good. But when I compare them to the C7 ZR1, the C8 is about 1.3 seconds faster per 100 horsepower, not taking into account much better tires, DCT, downforce, and PTM evolution.

The C8 ZR1’s record time was officially 2:32.30 while the production-car lap record previously held by the 2019 Corvette ZR1 was 2:37.25. We live in amazing times!

  1. Well, of course it’s faster with 1064 HP. The C8 race cars don’t come close to that horse power on the track. Those that want to race their ZR1’s will race against who?

  2. I’m willing to bet 99.99999% of the ZR1 owners don’t race them (unless you count racing to Cars and Coffee to get a good parking spot).

Given the choice, I’d take the C7 ZR1 with a manual…I’m old school…give me 3 pedals and the engine in the front.

  3. Kudos to the C8 ZR1. But naturally, I’d love to experience the C7 ZR1 on “properly tuned” Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires. The Cup 2 tires were outstanding, but the tire technology is exponential over time – 10 years.

  4. @Jim Mero; great to read your comments and level of engagement with it all. Q: Would the C7ZR1 need additional chassis tuning to properly handle the new CUP2Rs?
