We got another great “explainer” video from Lyle at C&S Corvettes in Sarasota. This week, Lyle goes over the importance of using a battery tender for the C6, C7, and C8 Corvettes. He explains how battery tenders work, their benefits, and why they are essential for maintaining your battery’s health, especially during periods where the car is driven infrequently.
While Chevrolet offers its own battery tender, Lyle specifically talks about the CTEK MXS 5.0 which also comes highly recommended for Corvette owners. (Full disclosure, I use this same one on my 1966 Corvette.) The CTEK unit is a bit more cost effective as its priced at around $90 versus the GM battery tender which sells for around $175. For those of you ordering a new Corvette, we would recommend adding GM’s Battery Protection option which prices their battery tender at just $100. However, the CTEK MXS 5.0 offers similar functionality to the OEM battery tender without the higher price tag.
Our Corvettes always seem to be discharging its battery even when parked, which is the main reason to keep your Corvette on a battery tender. A properly maintained battery also helps reduce avoid electrical issues and can save you from the hassle of jump-starting the car or having to replace a dead battery. Lyle makes the point that if you have a car cover to protect your paint, you should have a battery tender to protect your Corvette’s battery and electrical systems.
Lyle covers just the later model cars in this video, but has also promised a follow-up for earlier cars.

Using CTEK MXS 5.0 on my 96, excellent charger!
Use my C7 tender whenever. Keeps up overall battery life.
There’s some very poor reviews on the CTEK on Amazon, and the link for the ‘GM’ maintainer goes to a third party site which says the part linked is not compatible with a C7 or a C8. Right now I’m sharing a factory option genuine Corvette charger with both my 7 and 8 but I’d like one full time for each. So it looks like the only reliable choice is the most expensive. It would be nice if the links given in the article led to a comparable part, or the site should update their information, but at this point I won’t trust them either.

I don’t agree with Lyle about shutting your car door on the battery charger wire. While it might not hurt it I don’t think it would be good for it either. When I use my GM OEM battery tender on my C7 I always just let the rear hatch sit down in the closed position with the tender wire coming out the side without pushing down on the hatch so it won’t auto close all the way and pinch the wire. The interior lights will time out just like they’re supposed to and there will be no drain on your battery while it’s charging.
I use C-Teks on my 65 Big Block, and on my C6 and C7 Z06’s. I make the connections to the alternators and a good ground, leave the hoods ajar, and cover the cars. I never had a problem. Great product
What about the cigarette lighter 12V adapter . No need to open the hood..
