The owner of this 1961 Corvette convertible says the seven mechanics who have recently looked over “every inch” of the car “all state it is solid with no issues they can find.”
“Most of these mechanics have had this on a lift,” he adds. “All said they had no concerns about rust or structural issues. In fact, I was told the under-carriage patina was a plus and beautiful. Did my best to photograph this. It’s an original 64-year-old survivor.”
He inherited the car in 2023 from his father, who had purchased it in the mid-’80s in West Virginia and only drove it a few times a year on short trips around town and in parades. “However, when visiting my Dad, I would take it on longer trips (100-200 miles) and truly drive it once or twice a year,” he says.
Now, though, he has decided it’s time to pass the torch to a new owner and is offering the car on Bring a Trailer. The bid has climbed to $31,000, with six days remaining in the auction.
When his father bought the car in the ’80s, it had a larger Chevy engine, but he tracked down the original 283/230 horsepower motor and had it rebuilt and reinstalled, mated to a four-speed manual transmission. “My research confirms that the numbers are correct for a ’61 283 including the casting date,” the seller explains. “I also confirmed that 1961 283 did not have painted valve covers (the bigger engine did).”
Features include a removable matching hardtop, a white canvas top (said to have a rip), simulated knock-off spinner wheels with 217/75 Coker Classic whitewall tires, four-wheel drum brakes, Wonder Bar AM radio, heater, and dash-mounted rearview mirror.
He believes the car was repainted more than 40 years ago, and after that much time, there are some blemishes in the black paint, nicely accented by silver coves and a red interior.
The interior shows nicely, though there are some splits in the passenger seat bottom.
Since inheriting the car, the seller has had the car serviced, including changing the oil and coolant, tuning the carburetor, packing the wheel bearings, and installing new parts like the left-front wheel cylinder, fuel filter, engine mounts, valve cover gaskets, and electronic distributor.
