If the resto-mods of today are a bit too much for you, try this 1971 Corvette coupe on for size.
It’s about as original-looking as you will find, right down to its factory deluxe wheel covers inside a new set of reproduction 215/70 Diamondback Auburn Premier Radial tires with the correct spacing of the whitewalls.
Now, this Mille Miglia Red Stingray is being offered for sale on Bring a Trailer, where a whopping 600 photos and several videos seemingly show off every possible square inch of the car.
The high bid so far has climbed to $25,000, with five days left in the auction.
Once you get over how nice the repaint from 2010 still looks, the real star of this Corvette is the numbers-matching 454/365 horsepower LT5 monster residing under the big-block hood. It was rebuilt in the 2000s, according to the seller, when a new exhaust system and fuel tank were also installed. The seller – a dealer for the past 50 years – has since rebuilt the carburetor and replaced the spark plugs.
Built on January 15, 1971, this Stingray first made its way to Chevrolet Engineering in Warren, Michigan before being sold by Bonner Chevrolet in Kingston, Pennsylvania. The seller points out that subsequent owners have all lived within about 50 miles of that location ever since, and he himself has owned the car since 2021 as part of his personal collection that he’s paring down due to being “old.”
Key features include a three-speed automatic transmission, Positraction differential, removable T-tops and rear window (that can be stored in a special tray in the rear compartment), power steering, power brakes, and power windows.
The original black seats have held up well over the past 53+ years, and new carpet from Al Knoch was installed by a previous owner.
If you live in a hot climate, you might want to consider the price of possible repairs to the air conditioning, which hasn’t worked since at least 2021 but isn’t “a big thing” to the seller since “we are a T-Top off kind of drivers.” He believes all of the AC components are still there, and the compressor seems to be turning freely. He thought it just needed a charge, but his mechanic Dave recently determined the hose under the compressor has a leak.
If you’re thinking long-term ownership of this car, the seller believes it is a good investment, saying: “This ’71 Big Block presents an opportunity that you shouldn’t pass up. The C3 Big Block, chrome bumper cars are becoming scarcer every day. With Mid Year Big Blocks cracking the $100k mark, sometimes with NOM, this ’71 is a wonderful way to watch your money grow, all while owing a piece of unparallelled automotive art!”
