Corvettes for Sale: 1962 Corvette Owned 45 Years Now Offered on Craigslist

This 1962 Corvette convertible may not be a 100-point NCRS restoration car or as the seller puts it, it isn’t “a giant coffee table in your garage.”

But the agent, who’s handling the transaction for an elderly friend on craigslist out of the Kansas City area, guarantees “no one who comes to see/drive this car will think this is anything but an awesome car at a fair price.”

That price is $71,500 or best offer.

The same “uber-finicky” 72-year-old has owned this Corvette for the past 45 years and can trace the three previous owners before him. Serious buyers are welcome to talk to the current owner who can elaborate on the history of the car “in great detail.”

While the car isn’t perfect, it does have an “exceptionally clean, no-hit body” that has no damage and won’t require any paintwork unless you’re very picky. The Honduras Red paint is more than a half-century old, and the agent calls its current condition “a testament to the love and care” it’s received over the years, though he admits it does have “various minor flaws that come from owning and driving a 60+ year old car with 50+ year old paint.” This isn’t the car for you, he says, “If having a fresh, $30k paint job is paramount to you.”

Nearly all, if not all, of the chrome and trim Is original and hasn’t been redone, and there are no missing pieces, parts, or trim whatsoever. “If it’s supposed to be there,” the agent says, “it’s there.”

The car isn’t totally original, however. It has an NOM solid lifter LT1 350/370 V8 from a 1970 Camaro Z28 with reworked heads with hardened valve seats and slightly lower compression for today’s gasoline. Other mechanical updates include a new Holley Street Brawler four-barrel carburetor, Pertronix ignition “for easy, instant starts and smooth idle,” new steel flywheel, rebuilt four-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter and rebuilt clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing, all new brakes with a resleeved/reinstalled original master cylinder, and rebuilt/replaced suspension components that make the car “ride, drive, turn, and stop better than new.”

Inside, all-new black upholstery has been installed, with high-quality carpet and matching floor mats. This car is one of only an estimated 995 units with power windows out of 14,531 units made that year, and they’ve been rebuilt and function properly. All gauges are also in working order after having been rebuilt, tested and reinstalled, and even the original clock has been rebuilt with quartz movement.

A new complete wiring harness has been installed (with the original one retained), and all lights and electric functions are working properly except the horn. Other new items include a heater box (that “works great”), seat belts, and modern stereo head unit (with the original Wonderbar radio included).

Like-new 225/75/15 radial tires with the clean “smooth” retro racer appearance surround show-quality painted steel wheels matched to the exterior paint with show-quality correct “poverty” caps to complete the muscular look.

Included is an auxiliary hardtop that’s described as being in excellent condition and fits and locks into position as it should, and the original white soft top and frame are also included but aren’t currently installed.

The new owner will receive “a TON of documentation,” including maintenance/repair receipts and notes on oil changes and other items going back to the 1980s. Also included are several boxes of spare parts.

“Get in, hang on, and drive it all day long,” the agent concludes.

  1. No such color as Honduras Red, it’s Honduras Maroon. 1962 was first year of 327 and could be a fuelie or a 340 horsepower.

  2. Very nice overall, except I don’t recall the rear being hiked up like that “back in the day”.

  3. Regarding the rear end being hiked up, the modern radial equivalent ifor the ’62 is 205/75R15. Early Corvettes have very little wiggle room for larger tier sizing without body or chassis modifications including wider rear wheel tubs which require extensive labor and cost but allow for fitment of much larger rear tires. I suspect the rear end is raised slightly to allow the nearly new 225 tires to clear everything without the expensive mods. I quote parts of an easily found Corvette Magazine article about the subject.

  4. Thanks for the info. I do recall the drag racer ‘vettes with rears hiked up over drag slicks as well as wheel wells cut out to a larger diameter to fit.
