[VIDEO] Stolen 2024 Corvette Z06 Recovered in Alabama After it was Sold to an Unsuspecting Buyer

“Enthusiasts in the market for a new Torch Red Z06 might be wise to first make sure it’s not been stolen.”

That was the lead paragraph in our story earlier this year about a 2024 Z06 that had just been stolen in a middle-of-the-night heist in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee on March 1.

Sadly, someone didn’t heed our advice, and now they’re holding the bag after they unknowingly purchased the hot Corvette on Facebook Marketplace and have no way to track down the seller, i.e., the thief.

In March, Det. Jeff Renfro with the Lawrenceburg Police Department had called it right in an interview with WKRN-TV reporter Andy Cordan: “My guess is maybe they are taking these vehicles further south, maybe Georgia, and they are going to re-vin these vehicles and someone is going to think they are getting a real good bargain on them. Pretty sophisticated bunch, I believe.”

Thanks to the OnStar system on the Corvette, at the time of the theft, police were able to track the car to Birmingham, Alabama, but when the sophisticated thieves were able to disarm the system, they lost sight of the car.

That is, until a few days ago when a Birmingham patrolman stopped a red Corvette and discovered it was the one that had been stolen in March.

That driver did not steal the car, Renfro said in an update with WKRN. He’s now become a victim, too, as he had recently purchased the car on Facebook Marketplace from a seller who does not really exist but had set up a fake name and fake profile on social media to fool the buyer into thinking he was on the up and up.

Renfro says these thieves are very sophisticated, stealing high-dollar vehicles and then even creating fake VINs so they can sell them to unsuspecting buyers as if the deal is legitimate.

“Be sure who you’re buying from,” the detective warns. “Marketplace is not a good place to buying cars from people, especially if you don’t know them. There are so many fake profiles out there selling stuff, not just cars – they sell everything on fake profiles. They take your money and run.”

The Corvette has been recovered for Heritage Automotive, from which it was stolen around 3 a.m. on March 1 when hooded thieves broke into the dealership and rummaged around to find license plates and keys and then calmly drive out of the showroom with the Torch Red over Dipped Natural Two-Tone 2024 Corvette Z06 hardtop convertible.

“They busted a window out of the service lane where you bring your car in when you are getting it worked on, and once inside the building, used a crow bar to break into the lock box where the keys are,” Renfro said.

Two other vehicles stolen that night have also been recovered – a 2022 GMC Yukon and a 2024 GMC Sierra HD 2500 Denali pickup valued at nearly $80,000.

  1. Ouch!

This will be a very expensive lesson for the unsuspecting buyer!

    Caveat emptor. Buyer beware!

Even if they catch the thief, the buyer will never get any money from the guy.

  2. Buyer should have checked the VIN before purchasing (online VIN lookup would have shown it didn’t exist). If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Very expensive lesson!
