[VIDEO] 1996 Corvette Grand Sport Takes Down the Cybertruck in a Circle Drag Race

For the record, I finally saw my first Cybertruck on the road earlier this month and it’s probably one of the most unique automotive designs to ever make it into production.

While its specifically designed to do “truck things” like hauling lumber or going off-road, Tesla owners will definitely find other uses for its electric powertrain which offers 845 hp and a 0-60 time of just 2.6 seconds. Of course, I’m talking about racing.

We’ve seen all models of Tesla’s EVs on the drag strip previously and the Cybertruck famously showed off its racing prowess by drag racing a new Porsche 911 while towing a Porsche 911. While most would think a Corvette approximately 28 years older than a Cybertruck couldn’t possibly beat the EV in a drag race, that’s exactly what happened when the driver went up against a 1996 Corvette Grand Sport in a Circle Drag Race at the Colorado National Speedway in Dacono, CO.

Now, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this particular 1996 Corvette Grand Sport racing in the Circle Drags at Colorado National Speedway. Earlier this year, 2-year-old footage of the ’96 Grand Sport taking down various competitors was uploaded to YouTube which we happily shared here. While many will only see an old C4 Corvette, remember at the time that these cars were so good, the SCCA kicked them out of regular competition and forced them to race each other exclusively in the Corvette Challenge Series.

The Corvette Grand Sport is powered by a 330-hp LT4 V8 that’s mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, and its owner does have experience in winning these races previously, so we’re thinking there’s a chance for an upset. These races are just one lap around the track, and because of the tight corners, the Tesla can’t just rely on pure EV acceleration to take the win.

The Cybertruck takes the inside lane while the Grand Sport lines up on the outside. At the green flag, the Tesla is first to get off the starting line and heads into the first corners with a commanding lead. However, the Corvette is able to gain on the Cybertruck and is just off his rear bumper as they head down the backstretch. As they head into the final turns, the Corvette looks like it wants to go wide and the Cybertruck moves to the outside to block. Suddenly, the Grand Sport darts to the inside and is able to use its superior handling to out-corner the Cybertruck and crosses the finish line for the win.
