A new issue has popped up on new 2024 Corvettes and because it’s a safety issue, General Motors has been forced to stop the deliveries of any new Corvettes that might have this problem. Apparently, the NHTSA is also involved, and they appear to be in the process of issuing a Product Safety Recall over it.

The problem with these 2024 Corvettes is that the Seatbelt Retractors might lock up when they are in their stowed position (not used) and when an occupant tries to put them on, the retractors will not release the belts, rendering them unavailable as a passenger restraint.

We checked in with one of our dealers who said there are about 600 Corvettes with the issue and the good news is that GM has the VINS of affected cars. If you are expecting to take delivery of a new Corvette in the next few days, you’ll want to check with your dealer regarding this Recall/Stop Sale notice as the dealers are unable to release any affected Corvettes unless the problem retractors are replaced.

Of course, the other problem is…you guessed it! No parts available! That comes from the latest video from our friend Rick Conti who addressed this issue yesterday as the Stop Sale order came down from GM.

Some members of the Corvette Forum have said their C8 Corvettes have also experienced this issue with the seat belt fully retracting and then not being able to be worn. One of the few complaints at the NHTSA over the 2024 Corvette is regarding this issue with the seatbelt retractors. The owner said this happened to him on his first day of ownership:

Seat belt fully retracted and could not be released in first day. Had to drive 155 miles without operating seatbelt. This is a safety issue. My build date was 9/22 if you look at the forums this was not the only car built that day with a failed seat belt. seems like bad parts to me.

The text on the GM Recall Page says the following:

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 2024-2025 model year Chevrolet Corvette Vehicles. These vehicles may contain a driver and/or passenger seatbelt retractor that, under certain conditions, can become locked in a stowed position and unavailable as an occupant restraint.

The GM Program # is N242441392 and it was issued on June 6, 2024.

  1. Public confidence has a major influence on consumerism. If consumers can’t trust the companies they buy from, they won’t pay for their products in the future. That’s why recalls have devastating effects on a company.

    Many thanks,
    Ray

  2. The article states that the GM program number is N242441399 while the screenshot of the tech bulletin program number appears to end in 392. Can this be clarified?

  3. Good QC GM. A defective $400 alternator cost Corvette Racing the race last week. Probably made in Mexico or China.

  4. Took delivery of my 2024 Stingray in April. I used to work in Quality Control in a vehicle manufacturing facility and I can’t believe the exceptional quality of this car. No defects detected at all in this very complex machine. My confidence as a customer is certainly not shaken.
