A new recall has been issued for the 2021-2022 Corvette Stingray and if you have one of these cars, chances are pretty good that yours isn’t one of of the affected vehicles. That’s because only 22 Corvettes have been identified as potentially missing ball bearings in the rear half-shaft assemblies.

The Safety Recall Report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lays out the details for the recall:

The incident came to light after an owner took his Corvette to a dealer’s service department back in September after complaining about the car suddenly losing propulsion. During the service call, it was determined that the rear half shaft was missing two of six ball bearings. The C8’s rear half-shafts connect the wheels to the transmission and so the sudden failure due to the missing ball bearings caused the car to lose propulsion.

After consultations with the supplier, it was determined that there could be additional Corvettes impacted. A GM engineer submitted a report to GM’s Speak Up For Safety program on October 7, 2021, and a week later the supplier had identified 19 VINs with all but one sold in the United States. Last week, the supplier identified another six Corvettes affected with the missing ball bearings with four of those sold in the USA.

Owners will be notified of the recall beginning April 4th and dealers will be replacing the left or right rear half shafts assemblies under warranty so no costs will be incurred by the owner. You can also check to see if your Corvette is one of those in the recall by visiting my.gm.com/recalls and enter your VIN.

So far, GM has not received any other reports of similar half-shaft failures and no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of the improper half-shafts.
