[VIDEO] Is This the First Flipped Z06 to be Denied a Costly Warranty Repair?

Our friend Clarence who runs the CGarnerSpeed252 YouTube Channel was recently at his dealership getting an oil change for his 2023 Corvette Z06 when he noticed a Torch Red C8 Z06 sitting in the back. Commenting about it to his service advisor, Clarence learned that the current owner of the car brought it in for a transmission issue, but the warranty was blocked because the original owner flipped it within six months of ownership.

This C8 Corvette Z06 is a Coupe with the 1LZ trim package and it’s pretty much base model with very little options. Clarence does a walk around the car and notes there was no Front Lift, Z07, or any other substantial options that were spied on the car. Clarence also notices that the car is wearing a temporary North Carolina license plate.

The engine hatch was unlocked, and Clarence sees the trunk liner and carpet were removed to expose the Z06’s airbox and the transmission under it. We see a bunch of leaves are back there and it looks like the car has been sitting for several weeks based on some of the rust we are seeing on the brake rotors and the within the engine bay itself.

We don’t know how much this car was priced for originally, or if the original owner paid an additional dealer markup (ADM), but the 2nd owner allegedly paid $177K for this 1LZ Z06 and because it was flipped within six months, GM has blocked the car’s VIN from being able to be serviced for a warranty repair.

Now that the new owner is being confronted with carrying the full cost of repair, he tells the dealership he can’t afford those repairs and so the car has been sitting. The dealer did offer him an out if he wanted to trade-in the non-working Z06 for something else and Clarence says they even offered $102K outright for the car. But because the owner is so upside down, he has yet to fully come to terms with the financial pain that he is being subjected to.

As far as we know, this is one of the first Z06s to have a warranty repair blocked due to the car being flipped. And this is the main problem we have with GM’s anti-flipping program because it only really hurts the guy who purchased the car from the flipper. Any dealers that were charging massive ADMs didn’t see their allocations decrease, and the original flippers walked away with a nice pay-day. Meanwhile, the real enthusiasts who were willing to TAKE A CHANCE ON GM MACHINERY are left holding a huge repair bill. Chances are he will never buy another GM product ever again, and why should he after getting screwed?

Thanks to Clarance for bringing this issue to light, and he tells us that he will be working on an update to this story.

  1. So, he can’t afford the repair, but could afford the car. Seems odd, but the lesson is that if you buy from a flipper be financially prepared to pay for any repairs.

  2. He didn’t get screwed. GM has been open about this policy. He was too eager to purchase and now he is paying the price.

  3. GUESS its ok for GM rip off dealers to charge over sticker even after being told not to and nothing was or is being done to them and they still charge over sticker,,,even the ones you dont think they would still do and even make you think they are your corvette friends !!!And tell you we appreciate your business,,,,BOO GM

  4. worked salary at gm engineering for 30 years, won’t touch another gm product management was bad then and now with the skirt running the operation it’s worse!!!!!!!!

  5. I would much rather see GM amend their dealer franchise contract to require dealers to sell at or below MSRP, than spend their resources worrying about when and how private owners sell their privately owned property. And don’t tell me it’s not legal. Apple requires every one of its authorized retailers to abide by its pricing structure, and sues anyone selling new Apple products without authorization.

  6. Unfortunately the owner of this Z06 is caught between a rock and a hard place. Also the nosy busybody motor mouth that filmed this video had no business being out on the dealer lot putting his paws on this car that doesn’t belong to him and offering his totally useless critique of it.

  7. While this does completely SUCK!! I think I would be asking why the trans failed so soon?? Guy was a moron anyway, paid 177k for a 1LZ ZO6? To bad he can’t make the original owner pay half, GM is becoming a big joke. Pretty sad. I’ll bet that trans is NOT cheap.

  8. I don’t feel sorry for him, I am sure he knew what he was in for with not getting a warranty, granted the transmission should have not failed, but with a new model with all that HP, I know I wouldn’t take a chance, just to be one of the first one on your block to have a Z06. I would also think that paying that much over sticker, he had to have a pretty good chunk of change up front, because no bank is going to loan you money to buy a car that is selling over the MSRP, stupid is as stupid does.

  9. The Trannys are junk. There are plenty of them failing out there. It’s a bad reflection on gm. Warranty or no warranty it shouldn’t have failed. Guess they don’t do much testing before going into production, then let the owner deal with it.

  10. If this transmission problem is not rare, I wonder how this will affect the upcoming ZR1. A much improved beefier transmission or more frequent problems? This Z06 buyer paid like he had money to burn as it was not an investment when purchasing a low option car. Yet now he has no extra money after the exorbitant amount over MSRP that the paid.

  11. The owner deserved what he got. Agreed, nobody put a gun to his head, he knew he would have no warranty , and he still bought it. Purchasing over sticker or from flippers encourages them !!! and i agree w/ above, go after the dealers who are going way over sticker !! Loved how dodge fired every one at that dealership that sold a soldiers demon 170 out from under him , and then the company bent over backwards to replace the car, now that was a rare class act

  12. So Robert, you have a problem with someone bringing this to everyones attention, as i guess you know everything about GMs policies. Perhaps you’d just like to bury this information? Do you work for GM? Sounds like it since your pickin on the guy that reported the issue.

  13. So whats the difference between the dealer selling over sticker or some one buying it and reselling it over sticker ? Rip off dealers they are all over…

  14. GM could require the initial buyer to post a bond that would forfeit if the car is resold before 6 months. The warranty needs to stay with the car, the second buyer should not be the loser in this situation.

  15. My guess the original buyer is the bad guy here. He probably knew that there was a transmission problem and sold the car at a time when prices were still high. What sense does it make for someone to pay $177K for a 1LZ Z06. While I waited a long time for my Z06 3LZ ++ I still paid MSRP, which was slightly less than $177K, and I believe you can get one today in less than a year at MSRP.

  16. Caveat emptor: The axiom or principle in commerce that the buyer “alone” is responsible for assessing the quality of a purchase before buying. Ignorance is not an excuse!

“Blame is for “God” and small children”.

Final note: If you are going to buy an expensive toy, please pay with cash?

    Many thanks,
    Ray

  17. So the car already has rust on the engine bay? And with all the issues I am reading about with the C8 transmission, I think I will be buying a used C7 instead.
