Baby, it’s cold outside! With an incredible cold front gripping the nation over a long weekend, it seems like the perfect time to bundle up and do some automotive window shopping while we collectively daydream about that sweet day when we can get our cars out in the spring. Now, cozy up because we are about to utilize every sales platform available to explore each out-of-production generation of America’s Sports Car with a bonus section highlighting fast Caddy’s and LS-motivated Aussie imports. We also strived to provide something for everyone to drool over, regardless of their real or imaginary budget. If you’re prepared for a good time, let’s get into this, starting with the most illustrious of our findings!

C1: 1957 Corvette SS Styling Car

The one-of-one show car follow-up to Harley Earl’s SR-2 racer, and the Genesis of Chevrolet’s legendary Super Sport moniker made its debut at the 42nd Annual New York Auto Show on December 8th, 1956, before embarking on the full auto show tour and appearing on the June cover of Speed Age magazine. Originally built as a ’56 model, the SS was re-VIN’d and modified to give customers a taste of a competition Corvette as the still-new nameplate entered its fourth model year. It made its mark with Dontov’s famed 283-horse fuel-injected 283, a one-of-a-kind blue over pearl white exterior motif with silver coves featuring unique side scoops, and a pair of sporty vestigial windscreens. Now, it can be yours via Corvette Mike, which invites serious buyers to inquire about adding this headliner to their respective collections!

C2: 1964 Corvette Grand Sport Replica

From the “Bid Goes On” section at 427Stingray Auctions is a beautifully done replica of one of the most famous Corvettes of all time. The five Grand Sport race cars that were snuck out of GM’s back door despite the company’s ban on racing are the stuff of legend. Usually, tributes and replicas draw some ire in the collector car community, but when you are dealing with such low production numbers and estimated values nearing $10 million, “fake” GS’s get an automatic pass, and this particular replica was done to the highest standards. It features a ZZ4 small block Vortec crate motor, all of the necessary visual cues and modifications, including the most celebrated GS colorway and white side pipes, upgraded suspension, a Dana 44 rear end, and a four-speed manual transmission. Updates to the original formula include A/C and power disc brakes and steering. This listing has been live for a while, and if you ask us, it is worth every penny of its $95,000 asking price!

C3: 1972 Ontario Orange LT-1 Corvette Coupe

Corvette Mike’s extensive inventory also features our representative from the third generation of the Crossed Flags. Even though the first of three V8s to wear the LT-1 (the only one with a hyphen!) was diminished a bit by 1972, it still acts as the headliner for this stunning L88-hooded Stingray. For just $41,500, this Shark’s cup runneth over with desirability. M21 four-speed? Check. One of the best colors ever applied to fiberglass? Check. Restored? Matching numbers? Double Check.

C4: 1996 Grand Sport #517

If you go to our sister site, VetteFinders, right now, you’re in for a real sight for sore eyes! It’s a reasonably priced 1996 Grand Sport! Number 517 out of the one-year run of 1,000 is a coupe with the red interior (one of just 217 in this excellent combination), which has put 82,634 miles on its 330 HP LT4 since entering circulation 28 short years ago. It has been treated to a K&N Air Filter, new Goodyears, and Borla exhaust (the stock system also comes with the sale), but the AC reportedly only works on the low setting as of writing. It can be yours as-is for just $24,500, and if you want the air-conditioning fixed before taking delivery, that’ll only put you back an additional two g’s. This thing is a steal!

C5: 2004 Corvette Z06 Commemorative Edition

We will close out the ‘Vette section of this post with a run of Z06s, starting with the one that turned the old hi-po RPO into a household name and one of the most respected and even feared alphanumerics in the automotive world! As the lightest modern Corvette, ‘Vette enthusiasts LOVE the C5Z, but on the wider stage, it has long lived in the shadow of its 7.0L successor, but a quick Google search reveals that the 2001-04 Z06 is starting to appear on the mainstream radar. If you are looking to get in on one of these all-time greats before the masses really catch on, it would be hard to come up with a better example than the one for sale from Diamond Motor Works right now! It is one of 2,025 Commemorative Z06s built as both a swan song for the C5 cohort and a celebration of the newly created Corvette Racing program’s success on the endurance stage and at Le Mans, specifically. It featured a blue and silver exterior that mimicked the C5.R, and, with its ultra-light hood, it became the first American car with a major body component made of carbon fiber. This specific example has just 7,889 miles on the clock and is listed for $39,800.

C6: 2007 Corvette Z06 Ron Fellows and 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition

If you thought that C5 had low miles, wait until you see the [deep breath] Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Championship Edition Z06 taking bids on Hagerty Marketplace through Tuesday, January 16th at 3:10 Eastern! Example 260 of a hand-signed and numbered run of 399 only has 15 miles and, as of writing, has only reached a high bid of $35,000. Needless to say, we’ll be watching as this one unfolds! By using our old trick of checking sites that are exclusive to our neighbors to the north, we were able to unearth an Inferno Orange Z06 Carbon, the likes of which we haven’t seen hit the open market in quite a while stateside. This one only has about 8,200 miles, and Davenport Motorsporst not only fixed the often problematic LS7 heads but also treated it to a thorough cam, intake, and exhaust upgrade that was “conservatively” dyno tuned to 532 horsepower and 482 lb-ft at the wheels. The exchange rate also works in your favor with this one as its list price translates to $87,200, which is an unheard-of bargain for a Carbon in the rarer of the two colors with this low mileage! Before pulling the trigger and attempting to bring it home to the US, be sure to take a gander at our handy “how to guide” on importing from the Great White North!

C7: 2016 Corvette Z06 Z07 Convertible Callaway SC757

Man, it is exciting when you stumble upon cars like this! The Z06 returned in 2015 with the option to go topless for the first time. The first owner of this triple Black ’16 not only checked the convertible box, but he (or she, but in all statistical likelihood, it was a he) also sprang for the Holy Trinity of C7Z options with the top-shelf 3LZ equipment package, the 7-speed manual transmission, and, best of all, the Z07 track package that turned this into the hardest cornering car ever tested at the time. What’s truly crazy is that he didn’t stop there; this unicorn was also shipped to Old Lyme, Connecticut, where the magicians at Callaway Cars turned this already monstrous droptop into a bulging, swaggering 757 (two more ponies than even the 2019 ZR1 could muster) horsepower force of nature. If you only follow one link in this article, it should be this one because the sellers at Palm Beach’s aptly named Driving Emotions dealership never fail to provide some of the most detailed and finely shot photo galleries on the net (and while you’re there, peep that role bar and carbon rear diffuser!). One thing’s for sure: this is a lot of car for $119,900!

Rapid Fire Section: Not Corvettes, but Corvette Powered

Second-Generation (V2) Cadillac CTS-V: The Supercharged 556-Horse rendition of Cadillac’s BMW M-killing V-Series is absolutely painting the corners with its fastball this week! First, a three-pedal Red Obsession Sedan (that we’re hoping lasts long enough to make it to publishing time) from the final year of four-door production popped up on Long Island with just 8,300 miles and an extremely tempting sub-$50k price tag. Then Doug DeMuro’s creatively named auction site Cars & Bids stepped up with what is quite possibly the coolest family hauler ever minted: the Black Diamond manual V Wagon. Because of its above-average mileage (84,400), the long-roof V has a best offer of just $30,500 with four days remaining. Still, with a tried and true pushrod GM bent-eight under the hood, this fantastic sled’s usage history shouldn’t scare off would-be purchasers as they would on a contemporary M5 – or maybe your author is just trying to talk himself into this one!

The Last Great Pontiacs Knew How to Speak Australian

2006 Pontiac GTO: The last time we were left to mourn the Camaro, General Motors consoled those of us who need a car that knows how to party by bringing back the RWD Pontiac by way of its Holden outpost Downunder. Unfortunately, the rebadged Monaro’s looks never really meshed with the GTO mythos that it was saddled with here in the States. Those who gave the LS2 barnstormer a chance, though, were quick to learn that the modern Goat was an outstanding thing to drive! If you never had the pleasure, there’s a 3,946-mile time capsule waiting for you in Maryland as you’re reading this. Not only is it the closest thing to a new Pontiac that you’re likely to find, but it has BLUE LEATHER SEATS to match its Impulse Blue exterior and a scarcely believable $39,779 sticker; what are you waiting for!?

The G8 GXP and the Chevrolet SS

The GTO experiment might not have gone as well as they hoped, but the enthusiasts inside GM, luckily, weren’t so quick to give up on Australian magic. To build one last great Pontiac, they again looked to the Outback, and this time, they returned with a sedan that was dubbed “G8.” In its top-of-the-line and one-year-special GXP trim, it came with the joyful laughter-inducing combination of an LS3 and a stick shift. So as to avoid performance overlap with the Cadillacs above, GM left the hotter versions in their RHD home market, but that’s where renowned tuner Street Legal Performance, which was most notable for its work with the Fourth-Gen Camaro/Firebird, stepped in. SLP got its hands on roughly 30 G8s, including 9 GXPs. By bolting a host of upgrades, highlighted by a supercharger, to the latter set, they gave birth to the GXP Firehawk. Gateway Classic Cars has one of the nine up for grabs right now! It has 13k on its odometer and can be yours for $62,000.

Pontiac G8 GXP

After a brief hiatus, the GXP returned wearing a gold Bow Tie in 2014, with the manual getting its encore a year later. Again, we were left with the LS3 as the only option, but as these cars – now wearing the SS badge that kicked off this whole write-up – gained cult status, the aftermarket surrounding them has flourished. Several professionally modified SSs have changed hands in recent months, and each one has been a unique work of art! One such masterpiece currently calls the Pacific Northwest home, but, like Kalen DeBoer (too soon?), it wants to make a move! This perfectly stanced Phantom Black beauty went under the knife and came out the other side packing a Whipple supercharger with a 3.75″ pulley, American Racing Headers and exhaust, cams, and a DSX Tuning Flex Fuel Kit, amongst other modifications. If that sounds like your particular cup of tea, the car and its 44,000 miles can be yours for $52,900, or it can simply act as inspiration for your own blank-slate build from a stock specimen. The possibilities are limitless!
