[ACCIDENT] C7 Corvette Crashes into a Building on New Year's Eve

Will 2024 be a good year for the driver of this C7 Corvette convertible?

That remains to be seen, but it doesn’t seem to be off to a very good start.

Video captured on New Year’s Eve shows the dark-colored Corvette speeding down a wet Pittsburgh street before going airborne, bottoming out as sparks fly, and then losing control before finally crashing into a building. You can also see onlookers on a nearby corner running to the crash scene, where they found the driver and passenger apparently suffering only minor injuries.

Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reporter Bob Mayo visited the scene, pointing out minor scrapes on the side of the building as well as a steel support beam for an awning that had been knocked loose from its anchor.

“There were pieces and parts of that car everywhere for about 40 feet in each direction, but somehow it must have hit the corner of this building first, bounced off and then hit that big steel member and actually did a number on it, which had to be going enormously fast with a ton of force. So there’s no universe that would have happened otherwise,” says Dave Colaizzi, owner of the Metro Center Building at 1501 Preble St.

The impact knocked off the hood of the Corvette and separated the rear bumper, and the passenger side likely suffered damage to the body panels and paint.

“I mean, the car was a mess. There was no people around it. And so I was definitely concerned that there might have been something,” said Colaizzi, who was notified by building tenants and visited the scene New Year’s Day. “You feel terrible that had happened to the passengers. But they did, I think, head off with paramedics as far as I know. But they supposedly are okay, so that’s good.”

Pittsburgh Public Safety told Mayo that one of the occupants was complaining of back injuries, and the other one had a head injury.

Fortunately, no pedestrians were in the path of the Corvette.

Colaizzi believes drivers may be gathering in the area for “sideshows” or “street takeovers.”

“Over the last, I don’t know, couple of months, there have been tire tracks as though there have been cars doing like donuts and spinning out — those types of things — in the upper intersection on Metropolitan Street and down the little bit further this way. But you only see the traces of that in the morning,” Colaizzi said.
