[VIDEO] C6 vs C7: Battle of the Tuned 1,000 HP Corvette ZR1s

Sometimes the old dog can learn new tricks, especially if the “critter” in question happens to be a C6 Corvette ZR1.

Mike from the YouTube channel Street Speed 717 is the owner of two very special ZR1s – a C6 and a C7 that have both been nicely upgraded by Texas tuner Late Model Racecraft (LMR).

The C6, which started out with 638 horsepower from its stock LS9 engine, has nearly doubled that figure now to 1,200 horsepower, thanks to the installation of LMR’s top-of-the-line Fereday Edition Performance Package. The C7 received the same package, but its LT5 engine manages to hit “only” 1,000 horsepower, up from the stock 755.

The upgrades for both cars didn’t come cheap, with the kits costing about $60,000 apiece after work that included extensive upgrades to valve springs and retainers, port cylinder heads, titanium intake valves, LMR custom cams and lifters, and ported supercharger and supercharger pulleys.

After shelling out that much money, Mike decided it would be fun to see how the two brothers would fare against one another, so he held a series of highway drag races.

With both cars warmed up, Mike in the C6 and his friend Bobby helping out in the C7 start the competition at 70 mph, each then stomping the accelerator after a 3-2-1 countdown. After briefly staying equal, the C6 quickly opens up a big lead.

Next up is a third-gear dig from 60 mph, with the C7 faring a little better this time before a shift into fifth gear sends the C6 roaring off to another big advantage.

Finally, a third-gear pull from 50 mph sees the C7 ahead for most of the run, but once Mike redlines in fourth and then hits fifth, he pulls away once again in the C6.

Of course, it’s really no surprise that the C6 is the champ in this race. Besides its 200-horsepower advantage, it is 300 pounds lighter and is able to use the gear ratios in its manual transmission to pull for longer in a better RPM range at high speeds.

The C6 has another advantage, too, this one in the wallet, as the average value for the sixth-gen ZR1 is $88,203, according to classic.com, compared to the $181,373 for the C7 model.

By the way, if you happen to like this C6, you can check out Mike’s YouTube channel for details about how you might be the lucky winner of the car in his latest contest.
