City Chevrolet Named Chevrolet Dealer of the Year for the 13th Time and 7th Consecutive Year

Each year, Chevrolet awards its most outstanding dealerships the coveted “Dealer of the Year” award and it’s the most prestigious award a Chevrolet dealership can receive from the automaker. Of the 2,903 Chevrolet dealers in the country, only 60 dealerships will make the list. Winners receive a trophy and banner that can be displayed in the dealership.

One of the top Chevrolet dealerships to be named Dealer of the Year was City Chevrolet, Rick Hendrick’s flagship dealership in Charlotte, North Carolina. This was the 7th consecutive year for the dealership to be named Dealer of the Year, and it was the 13th time overall.

Following the announcement in October, the dealership held a celebration luncheon with all 185 employees, and they were joined by Chevrolet’s Southeast regional director Alex Walsh and Hendrick Automotive’s Chairman and CEO Rick Hendrick, who was there to celebrate with his fellow Hendrick Teammates. The theme for the celebration was “Memory Lane” and historic photos featuring many of the early years following Mr. Hendrick’s purchase of City Chevrolet in 1978 were displayed throughout the facility.

We spoke with City Chevrolet’s Chris Boone who got his start at the dealership at the age of 19 in the sales department before working his way up to being the dealership’s General Manager. He tells us that it was with immense pride to bring home the Dealer of the Year award, especially as City Chevrolet serves as the “mothership” for Hendrick Automotive Group.

“It’s the most prestigious award from Chevrolet, and it’s also a representation of Mr. Hendrick and everything he has accomplished,” says Chris, and he tells us that it was an entire team effort. “It takes all employees, whether they’ve been here 40 days or 40 years, they take a lot of pride knowing they are part of a prestigious group of dealers. To know they are working for a company that is represented in that light for Chevrolet and Mr. Hendrick is very important.”


There’s a lot more to being a Chevrolet Dealer of the Year than just selling cars, and there were several objectives that had to be met. City Chevrolet had to meet or exceed scoring in the Customer Service Index (CSI), the Retail Sales Index (RSI), General Motors’ Part Loyalty, and also being Essential Brand Element (EBE) compliant.

“The culture of the store is tremendous,” Boone said. “Our teammates in every department – service, parts, and sales – have all bought in to what it takes. One of the things we talk about here is ‘Win the Day,'” Boone says. “Each day we set goals, we talk about them in meetings, and then we focus on achieving them for that day. If we get more daily wins in a month than losses, then were going to have a successful month. You worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. This entire team has that mentality.”


City Chevrolet has also earned the Mark of Excellence Award from Chevrolet every year since the award was first offered 23 years ago. The Mark of Excellence is tied directly to a dealer’s sales efforts, and City Chevrolet has won that award more than any other dealership in Chevrolet’s Southeastern Region.

Chris says the Dealer of the Year celebration they held in October was special as it was really the first time since 2019 that everyone at the dealership was able to get together. The gathering was also an important opportunity for the newer employees to meet Mr. Hendrick in person. As a reward, every employee at City Chevrolet also received a special commemorative Dealer of the Year shirt, and Chris says the Hendrick Teammates wear them with pride throughout the community. “It’s not an individual award, it takes all 185 people working to achieve the same goal every day, and that’s to be the absolute best,” says Chris.
