At least we hope it’s an accident. This morning we woke to the sad news that a fire broke out at the historic north hangar at the Tustin Air Base in Orange County, California. The hanger was the location for the reveal of the 8th generation Corvette which was introduced to the world on 7.18.19.

The Los Angeles Daily News reports that more than 70 firefighters battled the blaze which consumed the 17-story structure overnight. Fighting the fires was made even harder due to the old air base not having any water from which to pump onto the flames.

At one point, video shows fire crews bringing in Chinook helicopters which are capable of dropping over 3,000 gallons of water per trip.

OCFA Chief Brian Fennessy has said that due to large fire consuming much of the roof, crews were moved back and they will let the building collapse and then work to put out the rest of the flames.

The Tustin hangers date back to World War II and they were two of the largest wooden structures ever constructed. The buildings were named historic civil engineering landmarks in 1993.

Over the years, the historic building was featured in a number of television and movie projects including Austin Powers, JAG, The X-Files, and Star Trek. And of course, Chevrolet utilized the location as its reveal for the 2020 Corvette Stingray.

  1. Such a cool piece of history.

I love the old air traffic control tower. So vintage! Please note, the control tower at Sebring is the last of the WWII era towers that is in actual use.

So sad it burned… glad no one was hurt, tho.

And if you haven’t seen them before, they are MASSIVE. Just massive. I live about 45 minutes from them.

  2. WRONG!

There are two hangers. The North hanger was destroyed. The hanger that the C8 was introduced in is fine.
I was at the event and live close by.
