Corvette owners are by nature overly protective of their prized sports cars.

So you can imagine the horror and shock for an Alabama man who discovered his brand new Rapid Blue Corvette Stingray convertible had been taken for a four-mile joyride by a valet at the Birmingham Airport.

The entire ride was captured by the Corvette’s Performance and Data Recorder system, including scenes where the valet can be heard laughing giddily and hitting a high of 6,000 RPMs more than once.

“People pay a premium to park their cars there and they assume that their cars are going to be handled with white gloves and to see, you know, and witness an experience like this, you know, people need to know what’s going on over there,” the Corvette’s owner Tim Scherer tells WTVM-13 News.

Fortunately, no cosmetic damage was done to the Stingray, but because the car had been driven less than 300 miles when Scherer dropped it off at the airport, it was still in the break-in period.

“A lot of the performance cars have break-in periods and the manufacturers are pretty strict on that. If you exceed those, all these cars have computers in them. They can see what was done in that first 500 miles. And it gives them a way out of covering any warranty issues,” Scherer said.

As you might expect, Scherer has been given the run-around by the valet company.

“The manager at the Birmingham facility reassured me multiple times that they would get me a letter stating that if anything goes wrong with the car, they’re fully responsible. And none of that happened,” Scherer said.

Even after the incident climbed the corporate chain, Scherer says company leaders sent him an email saying no action would be taken because the car wasn’t damaged.

Birmingham Airport officials released this statement: “We are looking into this matter and, of course, will cooperate in every way possible to ensure that the responsible parties are held accountable for any misconduct which resulted in damages to any of our passenger’s vehicles.”

Scherer did learn later that the company fired the valet, but that’s little consolation to him – nor the Birmingham surgeon whose McLaren was taken for a similar joyride by the same valet, who can be heard bragging about that earlier incident while driving the Corvette.
