[VIDEO] Another Chevy Tech Takes a C8 Corvette Joyride and Hits 148 MPH in Heavy Traffic

There really should be a leaderboard for these kinds of “temporary and totally necessary” excursions into three-digit territory, amirite? I only say that because the latest Chevy Technician to be busted by the Corvette’s Performance Data Recorder during a “road test” of a customer’s C8 Corvette may have achieved the high score at 148 MPH!

A member of the MidEngineCorvetteForum.com going by the screen name “tastysauce” recently encountered an issue with his C8 Corvette where he reported having trouble accelerating and as he returned home, he could hear a distinct clicking sound from the engine bay. He had the Corvette towed to Fremont Chevrolet and later got the great news that his problem stemmed from a loose spark plug wire. That’s an easy fix and he was definitely relieved to hear that was his only problem.

C8 Corvette

Like many Corvette owners who are now utilizing the Performance Data Recorder as a dashcam, he checked the PDR files once his Corvette was safely back home and discovered the Chevy tech took his Corvette out for a test drive during which the car surpassed 100 mph multiple times and reached a top speed of 148 MPH! He wrote about the joyride in his follow-up post:

Bittersweet ending I suppose. I pulled the PDR video just to see what happened while my car was being fixed, and I found that the technician (or someone) took my car out for a joy ride. Hit 100mph multiple times and reached a max speed of 147 (one hundred and forty seven!!!) mph on the freeway. Needless to say I’m beyond mad and have to follow up with Fremont Chevrolet tomorrow.

Not only does the Chevy technician hit triple-digits in heavy traffic, but he also was doing multiple lane changes and even camped out in the high-occupancy lane, all while blasting the Bose stereo so loud you see the PDR camera vibrating to the bass. At one point he is passed by a Dodge and then quickly accelerates to follow as the two cars weave in and out of traffic.

The original 19:40 second video has been taken down, but lucky for us, the Internet is forever as the portion with the street race was uploaded to Reddit:

Later in the thread, tastysauce confirms he contacted the dealer over the joyride:

“Yeh I’ve sent the YouTube to the dealer and I’ll be contacting the cops tomorrow. I’m also calling GM. He did some wild **** with my plates on and I can’t be held liable. This car is awesome but man it’s been a wild ride.”

We’ll be watching this story for any updates, and hopefully, the dealer will step up and offer an apology to tastysauce after this video goes viral.

UPDATE

As you can see the video has been marked private, so we checked out the MECF and got the latest from tastysauce:

The dealership first offered me two things:
1. A Corvette technician would look at the car ‘with a fine tooth comb’ and inspect it for me
2. They would offer me a detailing service valued $500 for the inside and outside of the car

I just spent $3000 getting PPF and ceramic coating, so I respectfully declined. I countered with I’d like a GM-backed extended warranty that extends the lifetime of the vehicle and I believe they have agreed pending I remove my scathing reviews of their dealership. Probably helped that the reddit thread went a bit viral.

I can not thank this community enough for your support. This has been a very weird experience, and the support of this forum has made it bearable. I’ll try and find the donation button later and kick some money back. This is a wonderful community.

  1. I hope they fired his ass. the speeds on the road from the dealership were bad enough. I would have gone back to the dealership the minute I saw the PDR and confronted the guy right away, right after I got the manager to see it and come with me. No excuse.

  2. I saw a reference in the Youtube comments that another owner who took his C8 in for service found that a GM tech had disabled the PDR before the road test and reactivated it after the road test. Shouldn’t disabling the PDR require that some sort of security code/password known only to the owner be entered?

  3. I would call the cops and my attorney! Then I’d file a lawsuit against the dealership and the tech.

  4. If the PDR is in Valet mode, then a password is required to access it. If the PDR is set up for dashcam mode (I just named that), then no password is necessary.

  5. Someone must be in some big legal troubles REAL BIG, since the video has been pulled down everywhere. A very disturbing video for sure, lawsuits, jail time, new car etc etc. this will not end well for anyone. PEOPLE BEWARE never let your car off of a car lot with ANY service technician unless you are driving it, and they are in the passenger seat. NEVER! This is worse than how I’d drive a rental car far worse.

The only thing the tech didn’t do is the Launch Control, but doubt he would even know how to do that in the C8, tech or not.

  6. When I was in high school I would work for my brothers shop during the summers. He would always yell at me DONT GOOSE THE CUSTOMERS CARS!!!

  7. So today’s corvette C8 owners get upset because 148 is fast? It wouldn’t bother me at all , not at all. That’s one of the reasons I’d never buy a vette, the great majority of vette owners “won’t engage” in a simple spirited race, there I said it! Twin turbo audis are more fun anyways.

  8. Give the guy a break, your car is fixed and fortunately there was no damage…. either mechanically or legally. I can’t speak for your ego and transmogrification of something this insignificant into something ‘earth-shattering’!! It’s a car. He drove it fast. Chill out!

  9. As an owner of a 2020 Corvette, yet another notice of a joyride by a service mechanic while the car is in for service worries me. These are special cars for which owners are waiting years for the privilege of parting with large sums of money for the right to own and care for a car that has become a near-instant legend. To have the people who are working on the car steal it for a joy ride under the guise of a field test is beyond unacceptable. Perhaps new criminal laws should be passed to cover what is currently not covered for this type of conduct.

  10. You bastards… the first tech drive was not a joy ride… you assume it was… why refer to it as “another”. The incidents here are very different, Shame on YOU!!!!! …. Bastards!!!!!!

  11. as i said before MY MASERATI DOES 185, I LOST MY LICENCE NOWI CANT DRIVE…

if you were in a really fast car how could not put the pedal to the metal.?

  12. Watched the video on reddit. If that was my car, my attorney would be in touch with the dealership. They would have two options: fire the tech or get sued.

  13. Just wondering how he was able to even find enough space in traffic on a week day to even go 80. Thats a rarity here in the bay area.

  14. Bunch of snowflakes here, doubt half of them have the balls to go above 120. You disgrace vettes, go buy a hybrid and choke on your latte.

  15. There would be hell to pay if someone did that to my Beautiful 2020 Torch Red Corvette!!!
