We all know the story of the infamous sinkhole that opened up under the National Corvette Museum back in 2014 that claimed eight special Corvettes. The cars were eventually rescued with some being able to be saved and restored like the 1 Millionth Corvette and a donated 1962 Roadster, while the C6 ZR1 was famously restarted right there and then after it was craned out of the hole. The Corvette Museum has commemorated the event with a special “Corvette Cave-In” exhibit, and there is a spot within the NCM Skydome that actually allows you to look down inside the cavern that still exists.

Late this afternoon, we caught a rumor of another sinkhole that has possibly affected the Corvette Assembly Plant, located less than a mile from the NCM. What we have been told was that it was actually an underground water pipe which burst during the first shift today, causing damage to the surrounding area.

According to the Plant’s Communications manager Rachel Bagshaw, the burst pipe damaged the surrounding concrete around it, and it also affected the plant’s fire suppression system. Because safety of workers is paramount, the first shift was ended early.

Rachel tells us that the extra precautions have been taken and they are working with a number of geological experts, local fire authorities, and GM safety leaders providing guidance. However, the good news is that Corvette production is expected to resume this Wednesday evening with the second shift.

Here is the full statement from the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green:

Bowling Green Assembly experienced an underground water pipe burst today that impacted the surrounding concrete. The plant’s fire suppression system was temporarily affected; as safety is our overriding priority, first shift production ended early. The plant has partnered with geological experts, local fire authorities, and GM safety leaders to implement extra precautions. With guidance and recommendations from that collective team, production operations are planned to resume on second shift tonight.

We are thankful that no one was hurt, and that operations are allowed to continue. We’ll stay in touch with our friends at the Assembly Plant and see if there are any updates in the upcoming days and we’ll bring them to you as soon as possible.
