The new 2024 E-Ray may be the quickest Corvette ever, but it won’t be able to prove it on the racetrack.

At least for the foreseeable future.

Corvette Forum reports that the new E-Ray won’t be allowed to compete on the track, according to updated rules in the National Council of Corvette Clubs’ 2022-23 competition handbook.

The new rule states:

Electric Vehicles/Hybrids using lithium type battery packs are prohibited in competitive events. If driven to NCCC events, they should be parked 30 feet minimum from structures or other vehicles.

But it’s not just the hybrid E-Ray that’s being targeted. All EVs and hybrids are banned from all track competitions.

Furthermore, if you happen to drive an E-Ray or other EV or hybrid to the track facility, the vehicle must be parked at least 30 feet away from all other cars and all buildings. Other organizations are following suit, too. Summit Point Motorsports Park, for one, in West Virginia has also banned EVs and hybrids.

Edwin Pardue, Director of Motorsports Operations at Summit Point Motorsports Park, says:

Summit Point Motorsports Park’s decision to take a ‘tactical pause’ in halting the use of electric and hybrid electric vehicles in all motorsports disciplines at our location is purely based on ensuring we establish an EMS response policy and procedure based on technical knowledge provided by the electric and hybrid electric vehicle industry community to better support the motorsports community.

The danger, according to NCCC, is the possibility of enhanced fires caused by the lithium type batteries in EVs and hybrids, in case they are damaged in a crash, not an unlikely occurrence on a racetrack. The damaged battery cells can experience thermal runaway, uncontrolled temperature increases and pressure that can result in the fire reigniting even when it’s thought to be extinguished.

Corvette Forum says these bans may also be instituted by other groups, especially in the short term, until safety improvements can be discovered.

Update
The NCCC has announced that it will change the rules again to allow the 2024 Corvette E-Ray to appear at its competitive events. The president of the NCCC issued this statement on April 28th:

National Council of Corvette Clubs has adjusted section 1.8.14 of our event rules to allow for the inclusion of hybrid vehicles in NCCC events. The rule was originally intended to only apply to fully electric vehicles. The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray will be allowed to compete. I believe the quickest Corvette in history will be a great addition to our future events.

  1. What about Formula E? This will get more interesting reactions from people as time moves along.

  2. Its about time people realized we are not ready even through the President pushed this crap on the taxpayer.

  3. Sounds like a bunch of Prima-donna bigots to me that are unwilling to accept change…Really, they ought to get some C3 tattoos and go out and reminisce about the good old days over some oatmeal and bananas at the senior buffet. Maybe some Viagra too, just to help put a charge in their you know what’s! They probably dream of B17 nose art too when they see a Hottie today in a bikini! Boys, bettefr get over it soon or get a horse drawn cart… or maybe a Mustang! The change it be a common!

  4. Some parking garages won’t let EV’s park in them. Watch when home insurance rates rise when they find out you park a EV in your attached garage. I like the idea of EV’s, but don’t like the government forcing them on us.

  5. Not new news.
NJMP bans all EV and has for a year. They don’t have the equipment to put a battery fire out and the possible damage to a track surface isn’t worth it.

  6. Go to tesladeaths.com and you will never buy an EV after looking at the stats. It’s kind of similar to openvaers.com for jab deaths.

  7. This is an unfortunate overreaction. I hope this restriction doesn’t last long since we are all moving into the world of batteries. Things improve quickly so don’t use a benchmark of burnt 10 year old Teslas.

  8. Tell me…on that trip to the pits in your electric racecar, just how fast do they “refuel” the car?
