Corvette Stingray Ranks Third on the Kogod 2022 Made in America Index

The legendary Chevy Corvette Stingray is a logical choice as the car that most symbolizes the American spirit.

That’s a belief supported by the latest annual “Made in America” study from the Kogod School of Business at Washington’s American University.

The Stingray continued to hover near the top of the list, dropping just a notch to third place for 2022.

The C7 Corvette had landed at the top of the survey in 2019, but the mid-engine C8 fell into a tie for third place in 2020 before rebounding to second place last year.

This year, the Lincoln Corsair and Corsair Hybrid PHEV tied for first place with 72 percent U.S./Canada content, followed by the Tesla Model 3 Long Range next with 65 percent. The Corvette ranked third at 62 percent, slightly ahead of another GM product, the Chevy Colorado at 61 percent.

The Chevy Camaro AT was the only other GM vehicle in the top 10, tying for ninth place at 54 percent.

Last year’s No. 1 vehicle, the manual transmission-equipped Ford Mustang, plummeted to No. 22 after changing over to a Mexican-sourced transmission.

The index uses seven criteria derived from public data and based on research by the Center for Automotive Research determining the economic value of different components of auto manufacturing. For example, the highest ranked cars are made by U.S.-based manufacturers using American engines and transmissions and with a high percent of U.S. and Canadian parts.

The seven criteria are profit margin; labor; research and development; inventory, capital, and other expenses; engine; transmission; and body, chassis, and electrical components.

This year’s survey found that VW, Toyota, Hyundai/Kia, Nissan, and Honda all increased their U.S. content while GM, Ford, and Stellantis presented drops in domestic sourcing.
