Corvettes for Sale: Custom 1963 Corvette Convertible Offered after 50 Years of Storage

What may be the world’s only C2 Corvette with a removable roof panel is currently on the market in Portersville, Pennsylvania, where its long-time owner is asking $65,000 for his unique creation.

We spotted the car on ClassicCars.com, where the seller explained that he bought this 1963 Corvette convertible from an insurance company in 1964 with some body damage after it had been stolen and stripped.

He worked back then for his father, who owned a “very prestigious” auto body repair shop, so over the next five years, he installed a wide range of new features, including a custom exhaust system with cutouts, aluminum four-speed transmission, custom interior with new dashboard, upholstery, seats, and steering wheel, and converted the convertible into a hardtop with a removable roof panel that stows behind the seats.

“The body was completely custom built and not a kit body,” the seller explains. In somewhat of an understatement, he says “there are no other vehicles like this one.” During the conversion, he retained all of the Corvette inner panels and door mechanisms, and the steering, suspension, windshield, and drivetrain are also stock, with parts still readily available today.

He says he built the car to be driven on the street and not as a show car, though he claims to have entered it in several shows where it took first place.

While his goal may have been to get his custom Corvette on the road as much as possible, he says because of work-related issues, he was able to drive it less than 300 miles before he parked it in a barn and hasn’t driven it in more than 50 years.

Now, “the car will require work to be driven,” he says.

The custom body is described as remaining in “excellent” condition, though there are some paint chips to contend with. The tires have dry rotted with some blown out, and the aluminum wheels are pitted. The custom upholstery has some mouse damage, too, and rubber items like radiator and brake hoses will need to be replaced, along with the battery and broken driver-side door glass.

A new owner will need to bring a flatbed tow truck to pick up the car, which is located on a farm 40 miles north of Pittsburgh.

At first glance, I wasn’t too sure about this custom Corvette, but after reading the backstory, I grew to appreciate the special effort expended more than a half-century ago and the then-young owner’s willingness to hang onto his creation ever since. How do you feel?

  1. Remember the anti-drug TV commercial with the guy cracking an egg over a hot skillet? 😵‍💫
    🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

  2. Nope. The body below the beltline isn’t too bad, but that fastback roof just doesn’t work at all. What is the purpose of those large air intakes just behind the door windows? To cool the rear brakes? My guess is that he had sourced that huge rear window from somewhere and wanted to use it, so he needed to find a way to make the roof wide enough to accommodate it. B- for effort, D- for execution.

  3. Looking at it from just the front 3/4 view (the last picture) I don’t think it looks all that bad for a custom Corvette except for the ugly air intakes behind the side windows and the dumb looking headlights. From all other angles it totally sucks.

  4. He says “It’s a one of a kind”, REALLY?? I would think so, nobody else in their right mind would recreate something this hideous…OMG

  5. I guess value is in the eye of the beholder ? i dont thinks i would take that car for free! Its gotta be a 348

  6. Wow…is that the original big block? And the dash is so cool and racy…oh, the steering wheel…lol… It is the ugliest Corvette I have ever seen and I would have bet money it was not even a Corvette. I’ll give ya $500 take it or leave it.

  7. First in my eyes it is an ugly conversion. The C-2’s were a beautiful body style and he ruined that! On top of that he let it sit and deteriorate to where it needs so much work done. Lastly he is asking way to much money for the shape that vette is in so no would not buy it for any price!
