Usually, we think bicyclists are more in danger of being struck by cars while sharing the road.

On Aug. 20, however, the tables were turned on the Venetian Causeway in Miami Beach, Florida.

About 5:30 or 6 p.m. that day, Juan Jimenez, driving his yellow C5 Corvette coupe, says an oncoming bicyclist rode straight toward him while doing a wheelie and at the last second veered away to avoid a collision.

“It happened so fast,” Jimenez told WSVN-TV 7News. “I honestly didn’t think he was gonna come out of his lane and come right in front of me.”

The incident was captured on video by a dashcam in the Corvette. Other cyclists can be seen in a group riding on the correct side of the road when one cyclist pops a wheelie in the opposite lane and heads straight for the Corvette before swerving away, front wheel still in the air.

“I think it’s super dangerous,” Jimenez said.

Unfortunately, this incident isn’t an isolated happening there, as police say they are investigating a series of violent attacks in Miami and Miami Beach involving a group of cyclists in 2021 and 2022.

One such victim told 7News that he and his 8-year-old son were driving home from a Miami Marlins baseball game on Aug. 13 when the cyclists suddenly surrounded their SUV at East Rivo Alto Drive. As the boy looked on, the cyclists “were kicking me, they were stomping me, they were trying to run over me with a bike, they were trying to hit me with a bike,” the man said, his bloodied leg that required a visit to the emergency room visible in a report posted by the TV station.

“[My son said], ‘Daddy, Daddy! Why are they doing this?’ Screaming, screaming,” the father said.

Like the wheelie-poppin’ cyclist, these suspects pedaled away and remain at large.

Over the last 18 months, WSVN says it has aired more than six stories about victims of these violent cyclists, with only two arrests being made during that time. Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS; tipsters can remain anonymous and are eligible for rewards up to $5,000.

  1. Is anyone surprised that the cyclists remain at large? tracking them down requires work and when they are brought in they will immediately be released as misunderstood youths who are just expressing themselves. So much easier to just give automobiles tickets
