If you own a Corvette and just upgraded your exhaust system with a slick-sounding aftermarket unit, you might want to avoid driving through New York City or Knoxville, Tennessee.

Those two cities have apparently installed fancy new traffic cameras with microphones that can automatically ticket vehicles that violate the city’s Noise Code.

Yet another reason, in their eyes, that you should trade your gas-guzzling, emission-emitting car for an electric vehicle that makes no noise at all and will thus save the planet.

According to the Lowered Congress Facebook page, New York’s Department of Environmental Protection recently issued a ticket to a BMW M3 owner after the car was caught exceeding the maximum decibel level by one of the city’s new-fangled traffic cameras that can automatically measure decibel levels near the road.

Motor Trend reports that more of these “noise cameras” can be expected in other cities across the nation, making us glad we live in a small town that hopefully can’t ever afford such contraptions.

That BMW M3 owner, by the way, was told to have the allegedly non-compliant muffler repaired or replaced, then have it inspected at a Department of Environmental Protection location. If the person fails to do so, a fine of at least $875 is threatened, with other charges also possible.

The letter to the BMW owner includes this explanation:

“[Y]our vehicle has been identified as having a muffler that is not in compliance with Section 386 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, which prohibits excessive noise from motor vehicles. Your vehicle was recorded by a camera that takes a picture of the vehicle and the license plate. In addition, a sound meter records the decibel level as the vehicle approaches and passes the camera.”

The New York City camera is part of a larger pilot program that will be evaluated after a trial run from September 2021 to June 30, 2022.

Unfortunately, for car enthusiasts like us, this lunacy is not limited to the Big Apple, which needs to be worrying about other more serious crimes like murder.

Unfortunately, even a small city in the South, Knoxville, Tennessee, is running a similar program using the same “noise cameras” from United Kingdom manufacturer Intelligent Instruments Ltd.

Motor Trend says Knoxville’s trial run “is designed to record all vehicle data when the camera is triggered, including audio levels as the car passes by, and then the vehicle data is uploaded to a server where an actual human technician then decides to proceed with issuing a ticket or not.”

I don’t know about you, but I just see this program as yet another way for Big Brother to stick his nose into a place where it doesn’t belong. What do you think?

  1. I would much rather New York went after all of the TLC cars doing 17 mph with their brights on and one blinker flashing in the left lane on the west side high way.

  2. As someone who not only appreciates Corvettes and other classic cars, but also enjoys dining and socializing on restaurant/brewpub outdoor patios, I don’t mind at all that municipalities are starting to clamp down on excessively loud aftermarket exhaust systems. Especially on cars driven by obnoxious jerks who feel the need to scream “LOOK AT ME” by revving the engine as they pass by. Give me a nice, understated, throaty rumble anytime!

  3. It would seem a lot more realistic if the cities would spend the taxpayers money improving the Infrastructure and social services instead of these worthless cameras. The citizens will eventually get tired of this and they will go the way of the red light cameras. Stupid city governments.

  4. So they let murderers out with no bail but charge $875 for what they perceive as a loud exhaust? Sounds about right.

  5. So these jack holes have nothing better to do?? Welcome to modern America people. To bad these idiots don’t try and make things better, like oh I don’t know fighting crime?! Glad I live on the “normal” West Coast.

  6. So what happens if there are 2 cars going by at the same time who gets the ticket. I guess have a car that is too ‘loud’, how about “loud’ paint jobs. Loud semi truck is ok!

  7. I wonder whether the Corvettes equipped with the performance exhaust system set in track mode will set of the audio?

  8. i wonder how many motorcycles will be prematurely get tickets because of their loud noise

  9. oh and will tractor trailers get tickets? how about a airplane ? will the pilot get ticketed? great way to pile on an already bogged down court system ya morons ,you people need to get a life,
offshore powerboats had to out fit their boats with a smart exhaust, that had silencers on them, and were removable for race, how about something like that fabricated for cars ? hmmm isn’t that what some cars have on their exhaust already ? just another example of morons that have nothing better to do with themselves

  10. First thing I’d do if I saw one of these cameras here in Washington state is get a crotch rocket, do a tail delete so plate can’t be seen normally, then blast right by it. Let’s see them idiots try and ticket something they can’t track down. Lol

  11. I raced for a number of years. But had no reason to be excessively loud on street unless was uncorked. There’s just too many flouting their very Loud cars all show no go. I bought new two of the fastest factory street cars. And dominated with both. There was not any need to be excessively loud.

  12. No way this could be more than a fix-it ticket. Any decent attorney can get someone out of this. Cities aren’t going to recoup cost of installing sensors, sifting through the data, and associated court fees. After a few lawsuits they’ll turn off all the sensors. Waste of resources. Should just do a noise test upon yearly inspection instead. This is stupid.

  13. So since NY needs to focus on crimes like murder as stated in the article… they should just forget about other laws completely? NY has been trying to figure out how to deal with noise forever. Blowing your horn you will get pulled over more in NY. It’s illegal to use your horn for anything besides to alert another car or pedestrian of imminent danger. Blowing your horn in any other fashion is illegal. Kinda lame to say NY should ignore other laws to focus on murder.

  14. So exhausts that are too loud are being hunted and fined … find that funny. So for the last 30 years, it’s been ok to ‘broadcast’ with loud stereo systems which under the same laws as well as federal law, is illegal. So loud exhaust (I don’t like much either) against the law but blasting your car stereo while at a drive-thru, getting gas, going through neighborhoods, etc.. is ok. Got it.

  15. New York is a loud place, and with all the concrete and tall buildings, I’m sure cars sound a lot louder there than they would in an open environment. I wonder how many cars with factory systems will be ticketed using this system? The thing that bothers me most when I’m in large cities like that isn’t loud cars, it’s the seemingly endless screaming of (much louder) emergency vehicle sirens.
But besides that, like others are saying, they are intentionally ignoring much more serious crime, and spending too much money & effort on insignificant minor violations.

  16. Congratulations to New York and Nashville! Apparently they have solved all violent crimes and prevented others from occurring in the future. Now the worst thing that could happen in those cities is a vehicle making to much noise. Sounds like a wonderful, safe place to live.

  17. I think that stupid douchebags who intentionally make their vehicles louder, and who have no respect for speed limits, deserve this and much more. Driving a motor vehicle entails social responsibility. This includes obeying traffic lights, speed limits, DWI laws, pollution control laws, noise ordinances, and much more. If you can’t accept these ideas, then you shouldn’t be driving.
    See you in court.

  18. I live in Knoxville and am glad they’ve put these microphones up. The amount of shitheads hauling ass down Gay street is deafening sometimes. There have been times where it has set off car alarms. It’s absolutely obnoxious at all hours of the day and I’m glad they’re starting to do something about it.
