C3 Corvette/Viper Mashup Fails to Sell on Bring a Trailer

If you happen to own a C3 Corvette and want to give it some ’90s pizazz, you might consider turning it into a Corvette Saber.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your outlook), only two such Corvette/Viper mashups were ever built back in the ’90s by a company named RPM Design Limited. A quick search on the internet found a website for what might be the same company, based in Ontario, Canada, and claiming to provide “superior plastic product and injection mold designs.” Seeing no mention of the availability of Saber kits these days, we suppose it’s probably too late to convert your own C3 into a Saber, but you could have bought one of the original two cars a few days ago on Bring a Trailer.

Even with a late burst of bidding that peaked at $15,000, however, this yellow Saber – which started life as a 1976 Corvette Stingray before its metamorphosis – still failed to meet the reserve figure on the auction. That means it could still be available if your heart is absolutely set on owning an imitation Viper, complete with side-exit exhausts and a power-operated tilting hood.

Apparently when the kit was installed some 30 or so years ago, a 5.7-liter V8 (capable of 350 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, according to a console plaque) was installed under that fancy hood.

The Saber also features a three-speed automatic suspension, modified suspension, and a custom interior with two-tone black and yellow seats and door panels. Speaking of the doors, they’re electrically operated on the outside, with stock handles remaining on the inside.

At least this car isn’t totally pretending to be something it’s not. Besides the Saber badging on the front fenders, it still has a Corvette logo (though for some reason it’s a C4 logo) on the hood.

  1. Too bad — it looks like a high-quality build and the overall shape is quite pleasing, if possibly a bit “front end heavy”. Perhaps lowering the rear a bit, as some commenters suggested, might help somewhat. The shape of the rear edge of the front fender had me puzzled until I saw the image in Pic 157, which shows additional panels along the bottom of the door and the dog leg in front of the rear wheel well that would have continued the lower body line from the front fender and matched up with the corresponding body line along the top of the wrap-around rear bumper. Too bad those panels were missing, as they would have helped complete the look of the car. Interesting that none of the commenters raised that issue, or asked why those panels were missing, or whether they would at least come with the car.

  2. It could be a fun car w/ a few mods. Like wheels , motor , interior… dump the junk under the hood and throw a Honda H24 in there. Slip some 19s & 20s on it , the interior….well , rome didn’t burn in 1 day……………..duh huh
