The internet has been abuzz for months with certain owners of the new mid-engine Corvette already reporting transmission leaks, premature contamination of DCT filters, or even total failures.

Now Chevy has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is investigating the all-new dual-clutch 8-speed automatic transmission used exclusively in the 2020-2022 Stingray and in the new Z06 beginning in 2023.

Chevy says a service transmission message that prevents the car from shutting off is allegedly being caused by “debris on the park position sensor magnet causing an incorrect position reading to the transmission control module.”

As part of the investigation, these two documents were shared:

Hopefully the problem will turn out to be limited in nature because the Tremec-produced transmission when running properly, provides very smooth shifts, as it can transition from gear to gear in less than 100 milliseconds without interrupting torque.

The Stingray’s gearbox handles up to 7,500 revolutions per minute and 590 pound-feet (800 Nm) of torque.

  1. So this is what GM gets when not offering a manual transmission! I’ll keep my C7 Z51 M7 supercar, thank you!

  2. When running properly? Nice way to word it! Unfortunately it wouldn’t suprise me if issues were to arise with that Tremec unit. Hence why having another transmission option like a manual is so important like Kenneth mentioned. The C8 Z06 won’t have heat soak issues this time around, but it may have transmission issues instead. And GM probably will drop the ball when it comes to taking responsibility for any failures that may occur.

  3. GM couldn’t get the last eight speed automatic to last in the gen 7 Corvette, now Tremec apparently can’t build a reliable DCT for the C8!

  4. I know for a fact that gm regrets going with Tremec. But too late now. Should have done the design and development in house.

  5. Flyncya, they did that with the eight speed automatic transmission in the C7. It was designed and built in house and it was a disaster! Those transmissions have a high failure rate. GM touted how fast those transmissions shifted, how much better they were than a DCT, even comparing it to Porsche’s PDK at the time which was laughable.

  6. My M7 shifts great especially with a MGW shifter. It’s funny the last time I took my GS to the dealer they had to get a lady from accounting to move my car out of the service lane. Makes a great theft deterrence.

  7. @ Rob: Funny indeed, maybe even a little bit sad? :-/
    The proverbial millennial anti-theft feature!
Anyway, have always been glad for my C7/M7, and now am gladder than ever. 🙂

  8. Typical GM junk and people continue to pay stupid money for a total POS. I will keep my 73 Corvette with 4 speed MANUAL. New stuff is no good.

  9. George Matter. One way to make yourself feel
better because you can’t afford a new one? Or
you reallyvdo think 48 year old ancient junk
    is better??

  10. Apologies for the typo’s.

FYI. I just ordered not a Z06 but the upcoming
monster ZR1 and Iam not worried a bit.
