No Remedy Yet for the 2020 Corvettes recalled for Loss of Brake Assist

Back in September we learned that there was Stop Sale Order on certain 2020 Corvettes and other GM vehicles regarding contamination in the electronic brake boost system sensor which could cause a communication breakdown between the sensor and brake boost system. At the time, it was believed that the contamination issue affected less than 40 cars, although a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report states the number of affected cars is 679.

Our friends on the Corvette Action Center noted a new GM technical document published yesterday on the subject and it appears that the fix for this situation is coming for those 2020 Corvette affected by the loss of brake assist. The current document only mentions the 2020-2021 Buick Encore GX and the Cadillac XT4 as part of the safety recall for the issue, while not specifically mentioning the 2020 Corvette yet (or other models affected that include the Cadillac CT4 and CT5, as well as the Chevrolet Malibu and Trailblazer. However, the document calls this a “phased launch” and that would explain why the remedy is only available for certain models at this time.

Our friend John Elegant of the MidEngineCorvetteForum.com owns a 2020 Corvette that was identified as having the brake sensor issue back in September. He plugged his VIN into the NHTSA.GOV website and his notice still stays “Recall incomplete, remedy not yet available.” The remedy in this situation is the replacement of the electronic brake boost module, however, the replacement part is apparently still very hard to come by.

You can find out if your Corvette is among those with this issue by entering your VIN at the NHTSA.GOV.

As we hear of any additional details regarding this potential safety recall, we’ll let you know!

Here are the details regarding the safety recall:

GM Document ID: 5697012 – #A202307262: Safety Recall – Loss of Brake Assist
(Dec 21, 2020)

Vehicles involved in this recall were placed on stop delivery September 24, 2020. Once the service procedure contained in this bulletin has been performed on the vehicle, the vehicle is released from stop delivery and the vehicle can be delivered to the customer.

This is a phased launch.

All involved vehicles that are in dealer inventory must be held and not delivered to customers, dealer traded, or used for demonstration purposes until the repair contained in this bulletin has been performed on the vehicle.

Condition:

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2020 – 2021 model year Buick Encore GX, and 2020 model year Cadillac XT4 vehicles. Material used in a sensor connection in the electronic brake boost system in these vehicles may have been contaminated during the material supplier’s production process. Contamination of this material may cause an interruption of communication between the sensor and the brake boost system under certain conditions. If communication with the sensor is interrupted, electronic brake boost assist could be lost. Extra pedal force will be required to slow and stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Correction:

Dealers will replace the electronic brake boost module.

  1. GM drops the ball once again! A huge hit like the C8 shouldn’t be riddled with problem after problem and delay after delay. Consumer confidence is extremely important in the automotive market place. Potential future and first time Corvette buyers could be turned off by all these issues with the C8.
