Thirty-two years after its “birth,” you might say this 1986 Corvette was “born again” today with a very important mission: to help battle drug abuse.

The black C4 coupe with matching black wheels and custom decals was confiscated in the early 1990s by the Sioux City Police Department as part of a big drug investigation.

Since 1996, the department has been using the car in parades and other events to promote its DARE program. Drug Abuse Resistance Education is offered to fifth graders across the country to show them the value of making smart choices about drugs and alcohol.

In the ensuing years, the car has needed major repairs to the engine, brakes, and air conditioning, along with cosmetic upgrades.

Recently, though, the DARE Corvette got even more attention from Officer Kevin McCormick and Lt. Brad Bollinger, who helped spearhead a restoration project they called “Putting Love & Sweat Into the Vette.”

Fortunately, they also received some expert help from Ben and Joe Knoepfler of Knoepfler Chevrolet, who volunteered to oversee the project and donated much of the work needed to fix up the car.

The department unveiled the special Corvette during a ceremony today. Since our first new Corvette was a 1986 model, it makes this writer feel good to see this one still serving such a noble purpose.

  1. Great to see some love for the C4. I own an 87 Z51 4+3 manual that I started a rebirthing process 11 years ago. Great to drive and gets plenty of attention at shows and cruise-ins. Without the C4 there would not be the 5,6,7 and next the 8!
