1994 Corvette ZR-1Today we are thankful for Los Jalops. Those car crazy guys at Jalopnik.com have finally decided to add some American Muscle to their current foreign makes only fantasy garage. While I’m a bit surprised the honor didn’t go to an El Camino first, I am very satisfied with their first American choice: The Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1. With everyone having Z06’s and SS/Blue Devils on the brain, it’s nice to see the Jalops remembering Corvette’s first super car, the ZR-1. Built from 1990-1995, the ZR-1 was a marvel for its time. The C4-style Corvette came equipped with the exotic 32 valve 4 overhead cam engine that pushed the base Corvette’s horsepower from 250 to 375, and then eventually to 405 hp in later production years. As the first Corvette super car, the ZR-1 set records including its most famous: In a 24 hour span, stopping only for fuel and driver changes, the ZR-1 Corvette averaged 174 mph. As Jalopnik’s Jonny Lieberman reminds us, that’s New York to LA and back in just 30 hours. To be added to the Fantasy Garage, readers of Jalopnik.com must vote, and so far they have with 85% recommending the ZR-1 for admittance into the exclusive club. Current fantasy garage stall members include the RUF RT12 (I don’t know what that is either), Maserati’s Quattroporte Executive GT, a 1978 Aston Martin V8 Vantage, the Honda 1300 Coupe 9, a 1931 Daimler Double Six 50 Corsica Drophead Coupe and the Ferrari 288 GTO. So go read the ZR-1 profile at Jalopnik.com and then vote yes! Corvette fanboys everywhere are counting on you!
