It’s becoming pretty common these days to see stories about C8 Corvette drivers getting caught with a little too much enthusiasm for the accelerator.
After all, with at least 495 horses under their right foot, eighth-generation Corvette owners face temptation every time they slide behind the wheel.
The latest driver to join the Corvette speeding club actually registered one of the lower speeds we’ve seen in these stories.
But don’t let that fool you.
Getting clocked at 102 mph in a 40 mph zone isn’t exactly the smartest way to enjoy America’s Sports Car.
That’s what one driver recently discovered in Lakewood, Colorado, where police stopped a Blade Silver C8 Corvette traveling an eye-popping 62 mph over the posted speed limit.
The Lakewood Police Department shared the incident on Facebook, complete with a photo of its speed-detection equipment displaying the triple-digit reading.
“Recently, one of our agents stopped a driver traveling 102 mph in a 40 mph zone,” the department wrote. “Yes, you read that right: 102 mph.”
Apparently, the driver was in quite a hurry.
Police weren’t nearly as impressed with the Corvette’s performance as its engineers might have been.
“That speed is illegal and incredibly dangerous, putting everyone on the road at risk,” the department warned. “Driving this fast can have serious consequences. Please slow down and drive safely.”
The department didn’t provide details about the driver or any citations issued.
Of course, it didn’t take long for someone on Facebook to find a little humor in the situation.
“Did you confiscate his New Balance 608s?” commenter Tim Nossem asked, poking fun at the familiar stereotype of Corvette owners and their favorite footwear.
We don’t know about the driver’s shoes, but we’re guessing the encounter with police put a serious dent in an otherwise enjoyable Corvette outing.
There’s certainly nothing wrong with appreciating the tremendous performance Chevrolet has packed into the mid-engine C8.
But there’s a time and place to explore those capabilities.
And as this driver learned, a public road with a 40 mph speed limit definitely isn’t one of them.
