GM Trademark of ZR1 Lends Credence to a New Super Corvette

Late last week news broke that General Motors had filed a trademark application at the US Patent and Trademark Office for the term “ZR1” which would be used for “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles”.

Of course, the news blew up on the internet with the general consensus being that the term would be used for a future mid-engine Corvette that most believe is currently under development.

GM has used RPO codes as both ZR-1 and ZR1 three times in Corvette’s 63 year history. To see where the future is heading, let’s do a quick recap of the past.

Car and Driver: Next Generation C8 Corvette to be Mid Engine Only

It feels like silly season is upon us as these C8 Corvette rumors continue to abound. The latest comes from Car and Driver’s Technical Editor Don Sherman, who we like to remind people is a long-time Corvette owner. When Sherman has something to say about a next generation C8 Corvette, we listen like he’s EF Hutton.

Sherman’s bombshell in his report at Car and Driver is that the next generation C8 Corvette will be going to a mid-engine architecture only. The mid-engine project name is call ZERV, a nod to Zora’s experimental mid-engine test vehicles from the 1960’s known as CERV-1 and CERV-2. The C8 Corvette ZERV will feature two models, a base model powered by the current LT1 V8 as well as a high performance version powered by a new Corvette engine that is under development.

The decision won’t affect American customers, but General Motors says it has changed its corporate philosophy to include the engineering of right-hand drive capabilities in certain vehicles from the beginning.

While that switch won’t help customers in places like Australia that might be candidates for the current Camaro and Silverado if they were RHD, it does offer hope in the future that such vehicles could show up some day in The Land Down Under.

Last week, the Australian car magazine Wheels broke an exclusive report about the trouble that General Motors is having in securing a trademark in the land of Oz for its crossed-flags Corvette logo. Specifically, the Corvette logo trademark has been denied multiple times due to protections that Australian intellectual property laws grants to the Red Cross.

However, after reading the article and reaching out to the author who wrote the story, we believe the bigger news is that General Motors, in securing a trademark for its Corvette logo in Australia, is laying the foundation for the future importation of the rumored Mid-Engine Corvette codenamed Zora or ZoraZR1.
