If you came of age in the late 1960s or early 1970s, this outrageous 1968 Corvette is screaming your name.
At least it’s screaming mine.
And believe it or not, I already have the perfect outfit to wear while driving it.
A couple of years ago, my wife and I attended a costume party at her company’s Christmas celebration, and I decided to turn back the clock about half a century.
I showed up wearing a long-haired wig, platform shoes and a white Elvis Presley jumpsuit.
That’s right. For one glorious evening, I was the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Or at least a slightly older version of him who probably needed help getting out of those platform shoes.
Now, if only I’d had this wild custom Corvette to make my grand entrance!
Unfortunately, when I recently showed my wife photos of this psychedelic Stingray and enthusiastically announced, “I want it!” she gave me one of THOSE looks.
You married guys know exactly what I’m talking about.
Guess that’s a no, huh?
But come on, honey! Just look at this thing!
You have to admit this crazy Corvette would be the hit of practically any car show it entered, thanks to its wild pearl-blue paint job and silver-blue flames that literally scream “STINGRAY!” down the sides.
This isn’t a Corvette for somebody who likes to blend into the crowd.
It’s a rolling tribute to an era when custom cars were supposed to be outrageous, platform shoes were fashionable, and nobody thought twice about wearing a polyester leisure suit.
Or, in my case, a white Elvis jumpsuit.
Offered for sale on eBay in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, this one-of-a-kind 1968 Corvette carries an asking price of $29,000, with the seller willing to consider offers. That’s a lot of money for a car that might cause your neighbors to question your sanity.
Then again, how do you put a price on something that looks like a full-size Hot Wheels creation?
The custom bodywork takes the already dramatic styling of Chevrolet’s third-generation Corvette and turns everything up several notches.
The exaggerated shark-like appearance, radically altered roofline and flamboyant paintwork make this Stingray look as though it escaped from a custom-car show sometime around 1973.
And somehow, that’s exactly what makes it so appealing.
The interior isn’t quite as wild as the exterior, although the builder apparently couldn’t resist adding a little nightclub atmosphere.
There’s custom upholstery, limousine-style lighting, a combination of analog and digital gauges, and an upgraded sound system with a GPS-equipped stereo.
Imagine pulling into your local cruise-in, switching on the interior lighting and watching the crowd gather.
Subtle? Absolutely not. Entertaining? You bet.
Fortunately, there’s also some good old-fashioned Chevrolet horsepower underneath all that psychedelic artwork.
According to the seller, the Corvette is powered by a rebuilt 350-cubic-inch V8 with a four-barrel carburetor, backed by a four-speed manual transmission.
The seller describes the car as being in excellent condition, although the listing offers relatively few details about its mechanical history or when the extensive customization was completed.
The odometer reportedly shows a little more than 34,000 miles, but the actual mileage hasn’t been verified.
Naturally, anyone considering a purchase should take a close look at the bodywork, frame, suspension and quality of the modifications.
One interesting question is how the Corvette handles, considering its unusual stance and extensive alterations.
This might be a car better suited to cruising slowly past an appreciative crowd than attacking a winding mountain road.
But let’s face it. Nobody buys something like this because they’re worried about shaving a few seconds off their lap times.
Love it or hate it?
There’s an old saying in the collector-car hobby that everybody loves a custom car until it’s time to buy one.
And there’s probably some truth to that.
A Corvette this heavily modified will never appeal to purists who believe every classic Stingray should look exactly as it did when it rolled out of the St. Louis assembly plant.
Some enthusiasts will undoubtedly consider this car a crime against Corvette history.
Others will see it as a wonderful example of the creativity and individuality that made the custom-car movement so much fun.
Count me among the latter.
Sure, the novelty might eventually wear off after you’ve taken it to every car show within a hundred miles.
But can you imagine the conversations this Corvette would start?
You wouldn’t even have to win a trophy. Just pulling into the parking lot would be an event.
And unlike the little Hot Wheels cars we played with as kids, this one actually has a V8 engine and a four-speed transmission.
For $29,000, somebody could own a genuine piece of rolling automotive nostalgia.
As for me, I suppose I’ll have to settle for admiring the photos.
Unless, of course, I can convince my wife that a custom 1968 Corvette would make the perfect accessory for my Elvis costume.
After all, I’ve already got the wig, the platform shoes and the white jumpsuit.
All I need now is the car.
